Here's £4k- Go and buy me a car!

A family member has very kindly offered to pay for a "new" car for me at around £3/4000.
However it's been SO long since I last purchased a car I don't know what to look for in a good deal. I always used to buy private, and I want to avoid any kind of finance deal, owning a cheaper car outright is more important to me than have debt to somebody.
I should add that I'd want this to be a family friendly car- 5 door but I couldn't care less about the make, engine size or colour (except white- reminds me of vans!) so long as it's got a good couple of years life in it and cheap to maintain
If I gave you £4k with this spec what would you buy for me?

Some times you have to hold back to go forward to where you want to be.

Toyota Avensis.
Vauxhall Vectra is cheap to fix, but needs a lot of fixing, Saabs are very good buys as they went bust, and some spares are very hard to get, so people won't touch them, but they are very well built Vauxhalls.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

You will probably get most for your money buying a Mondeo.0

Volkswagen Golf and Skoda Octavia, especially have a look at the Octavia as it is a lot of space for the money. Also, how far do you drive each year? If its less than 10 000 miles or is mostly town driving then a petrol car would make much more sense than a diesel, but if its going to be used for a lot of motorway miles then a diesel is the better bet as it will work out cheaper for you.
Both those cars mentioned also come in estate form if you want something with a bigger boot.0 -
