my friend went to australia for 6 months and orange let her 'pause' her contract for the time she was away. when she got back she just rang up and they reactivated it. you still have to the contract for the 12/18 months just with a break in between. i'm sure most phone companies would have a similar offer.

Of course you don't want to waste money, who would!

Try and get a relly or mate to take it over, ask around - they pay you every month and then you can pay your contract. Or have a word with whichever Rupert is responsible for the welfare of your troop and see if he/she can suggest anything.
Or.........try and find the uk number of your supplier and ring and explain your situation. Try the hearts and flowers stuff and you just might get lucky. If they don't sound very sympathetic ask them who your next of kin should speak to when you get your head shot off your shoulders and can't pay.

Good luck, best wishes, stay safe. SOME of us appreciate what you're doing in OUR name.

And to everyone else - read Kipling's poem Tommy !

I don't think anyone demonstated any disrespect for the OP on this thread. We just tried to answer his questions. If he can get them to suspend his contract then great. Some of the other posters seem to think he may be able to

well its best to talkk to customer services which will end with no results, however usually what happens is they will cancel it because it would class under special circumstances, as far as proof is shown via fax or letter.

We are talking about ''3'' so i doubt they would be too good to anyone ...

Also i thought the lowest tariff was 15 ....

I think the OP and soldiers should be excused from contracts such as these, given that they're putting their lives on the line without which these companies wouldn't be able to trade in the first place.

Something that always makes me laugh (cynically) is how the banks which charge the NHS excessive amounts, take their staff to A+E departments when someone is injured and then have the audacity to complain about the 4-hour wait.

The OP may be able to buy themselves out of the contract worst case scenario.

Also, it is unreasonable for '3' to expect the OP to be pampering to their every need while he's running around the desert with a loaded gun. Are '3' able to offer customer service from Afghanistan anyway?

Also... '3' wouldn't give a contract to someone who is a bankcrupt since they're a financial risk. So surely if they're that careful and worldly about things, then they would consider the effect of giving a contract to a soldier and make suitable arrangements.

Of course everyone knows that '3' couldn't give a damn one way or the other. They're just a faceless organisation.

Although I can see it is a pain to pay for a phone that you cannot use ...I really cant see that it is down to 3 to make allowances as you signed the contract in the knowledge that you were in the forces and presumably knew that you could be sent abroad at any time ?? All your other bills will need to be paid while you are away - I really think you need to put it down to experience. I am not in any way not respectful of what you are doing ..just cant see that 3 should make allowances for a contract you signed.
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

My Hubby is in the US military they have a bill set up that once they get orders they can et out of contracts like this, but sadly here in the UK they don't. It is at the discretion of the company. And it depends who you get at the end of the phone whether they have sympathetic ear or not.

I guess the phone companies need to decide if they want to discount about 2% of the adult population from being posisble customers(and customers with a fairly stable job at that), it's also a bit of a mockery that a forces ID card is a valid ID fro taking out a contract.
I guess those of the 'tough luck' opinion also think this should apply to thsoe who are incapacitated for any reason i.e. coma/long term illness where they have no use for a phone for a period of time?
