On my return flight i was badly delayed and it was late in the evening. i wanted to ring Premier Inn to check that my room woul be held open. Their website only gives an 0844 number so I had to waste money trying to find an alternative number on the saynoto0870 site online. That was my one grumble.
I'm sure that was pain, but beyond the control of the staff at PIT5, who I've always found to be very helpful.
I must admit I have a folded piece of paper in the back pocket of my bag with all my 'just in case' phone numbers on (gleaned from saynoto0870 before I travel) I always think if I've got the numbers I'll probably never need them, but if I haven't got them - jinx!

If you're staying at the Gatwick North PI before us, would you let me know what you think/how you get on?
The reviews I've seen have been predominantly good :)

A barcode is a barcode, as long as the screen is clear then you will have no issues holding the boarding cards on the phone...

I'd have intuitively assumed the same. HOWEVER, I think Dirk's probably right to at least some extent (although no doubt national/local regulations also have some impact on variance between airports).
I've used these for Lufthansa flights from Munich - I suspect it might be the technology of the scanners/readers built into the gates that needs to be compatible, rather than the airline, though.

Some barcode scanner lasers aren't powerful enough to penetrate the glass on your smartphone screen to actually read the barcode. That's why you can use the Tesco Clubcard smartphone app at big stores, for example, but at Tesco Metro you can only use a physical card - the small stores have less powerful scanners which can't penetrate a smartphone screen.

If different airports have different barcode scanners, this could be a likely cause.

Oh damn, I've already entered my API manually, I'd liked to have given this a go.

I used Ryanairs mobile app recently from East Mids to Carcassonne, one phone with all 4 outbound and return passes. No problems at all for check in but then they did still print me out boarding passes for the security gate and boarding so guess they are only half way there. Still far less hassle than almost everyone else who was faffing around with bits of paper. Hopefully it will soon become the default and replace the paper, although I suspect the only way they will fully achieve this will be to charge those who still want to use the old paper system.

Personally I disagree. The "phaffing" around that I experience is the people who have their mobile boarding cards on their phones! Especially those with passes with multiple passengers on. The times I have stood behind people who can't show the pass on their mobile at the required time, or the gate readers won't read the QR or bar codes, is many. I'm still more than happy to hold a small piece of paper in my hand and show it when required without all the 'phaffing' technology :)
