Hi MFD, yes, I hope the negativity  ends shortly.  I am forever amazed at the damage people can do with their thoughtlessness - including selling your stuff for pence without thought or consideration -  that it isn't theirs to sell.  Oh well.  They have to pay me back, but I will never get back the true value of a  family piece sold for £40 which is worth nearly £1000 second hand.  I wish I could claim that they are drug dependent and needed a fix!  But no, they just had the brains of an aphid and thought it ok to start selling someone else's furniture without thought as to how much they could have got with a bit more thought and a bit less greed.  Not a problem as I will calm down and it's not like they killed anyone.

Yes, the cleaner turned up.  Her work has been affected by the firebreak, so she is more likely than not to keep turning up as I will be regular income whilst all the other holiday chalets etc are locked down and closed.  She isn't covered by furlough either, so really difficult.  We are coming out of the firebreak, where they couldn't take any holiday makers, and just as it is lifted, England go into lockdown for a month, which means there won't be any holiday makers coming!  A real mess financially for so many people reliant on the tourist industry.

1st of the month and I have made a £100 payment into the mortgage. Feeling positive about this.
Also making a £100 payment into the car loan.  Did a quick calculation, and if done right, I can pay the loan off in 4 years at this rate.  All good and matches my desire to be debt free by the time I am at retirement age - or actually 1 year before retirement age.  Everything going in the right direction.

Shame it has taken me to get to the grand old age of 55 before getting on top of my finances to this extent.

HI Tahlullah - sorry your wider family were so thoughtless. How irritating about the tradesmen too. Glad your cleaner turned up at least. It sounds like you've had a rough few days. You are being very disciplined with £ currently. Hope you get past your block to sort out the accounts. Keep plugging away and hopefully you will get to your dream retirement date free and clear

Thanks for the kind thoughts Savings.  I would love to say it was family, but alas...

To be brutally honest, I don't think I am being disciplined with money.  I think I just have a 'lot of it spare' the moment, perhaps because I have been trying to keep control / budget?  Anyway, it's always easier to make plans and budget in different places - and keep to those plans - when you have the stuff.  So, I am just budgeting what I do have rather than trying to budget what 'little' I have, if you get what I mean.  Considering what is happening in the world, I am fortunate to be in this position.

Right, a better quality pet insurance bought after demanding my money back on the one I had bought last week.  Luckily, I had over a week before it was due to start, so I didn't lose anything in the cancellation process.  Such a rip off.  My cat went to the vet with vomiting and they then tell me they are refusing to cover anything related to the gastro-intestinal tract going forward.  That is a lot of the cat to disregard just because of vomiting!  Anyway, better insurance purchased.  More expensive, but this is another of those times where you get what you pay for.

Still not done the account stuff and Sunday is looming large.  On the positive side, it looks as if I will be starting the new year below £41k.  Assuming I make the payments I am planning, then I will be at around £40,600.  So pleased with this, so I will now ensure it happens.

I think once, back several (many) years ago, I got my mortgage down to about £17k.  Then I pushed it back up as life does that to you.  That seems such a long time ago and an impossible ask to ever achieve again, but I am absolutely determined - assuming I still have a job and am earning a wage - to be at £25k-ish by the end of 2021.  That means payments of £15k in the year.  We will see.  The end is getting closer and I can actually envisage it.  I am so determined to do this.  A life without a mortgage.  Wow.  So, the plan is to finish this year - only 2 months to go, and then focus on 2021.

    Bring it on!

  • Good luck with your goals. I seem to have stalled these last couple of months. A few more treats and less discipline. I think its diversion from real life.
Are you in Wales? feel free not to answer. I was reading you post and had a light bulb moment :joy:

Hi MFD, yes, I am in Wales.  North Wales to be precise.  And I do agree, that this year has led to us re-examining life and our goals. For me, as much as I want to get rid of this millstone around my neck called a mortgage, I want to enjoy life as well.  As I said, I appear to have more money - and I am therefore enjoying it.  But I don't really think I have more, I think I am just prioritising differently, or perhaps not at all.  If I really focused with the spare money, I could pay the mortgage down even quicker, but I am not doing that.  Maybe a life with some acceptable debt is more important than a life spent trying to get rid of the debt and letting the restricted good times that we have at present, pass us by?  I don't know.  So I am plodding on, doing what I can when I see an opportunity.  It will work out, or it won't.  But I will have enjoyed the journey along the way.

Today is Remembrance Sunday and I still haven't done the paperwork for the Accountant.  I did however spend nearly £20 on cat food yesterday, which should last him to the end of the month, along with what I already have in the house.  The cleaner came, which is good.  Today should be a NSD, so I will see if I can guilt myself into pulling paperwork out and trying to sort it into the correct year and then scan it across.  Not difficult is it???
Mortgage paid, so on the right track, and the interest is coming down slowly.  Still paying around £2 per day.  I feel I need to stop spending until Christmas is over, so that is my plan.  No spend beyond anything directly related to Christmas, paying for the Accountant or fuel in the car - that gives me a lot of scope but it will also allow me to ask the question, do I really need this right now?  Hopefully, January will be easier to deal with.  I need to get a grip now before I run amok and forget that I am supposed to be aiming to pay the mortgage down.
