Mobile phone data usage.

You probably aren't being thick I was - my HTC Desire is on Android 2.3 and I don't see it on that. It is on my Nexus on 4.3 and was on earlier releases on that. I'm not sure what Android release first had it.
As macman said though there are plenty of Android apps that will measure usage so check in the Play store for "data usage stats"0 -
Can't find data usage on it. But, have not used the phone for over an hour and it's still using data ?? Still logged onto here though, and several tabs open, is the tabs open doing it?
Sorry if i'm being thick....but I am with these things. god help this board when I get a computer!!...run for the hills folks.
The app that you can use to monitor your useage is 3G Watchdog.0 -
I was going to advise on 3G Watchdog but was beaten to it.
Gives stats of daily, weekly usage IIRC.0 -
I used to use my phone daily, almost all day, on various forums. I never exceeded 200Mb Usage on "browsing". My "streaming" usage was separate, so that doens't include any of that.
To exceed 1Gb/mo browsing forums, you must really be going for it! I'd look for usage elsewhere. Are you using maps/navigation/image or videos or music services online a lot? It's those that chew data allowances.0 -
I suspect there is syncing going on for apps because there is no way a mobile version, or low res version should be eating so much data.
Try seeing what apps you are auto updating/running in the background. It's likely something/many things is/are running in the background. You could use an app killer, but be very careful about what apps you kill. There's a lot that are integral to the running of the phone/don't need to be killed.
Don't forget if you update them and aren't using wifi this can take a fair chunk of allowance too. I always have my phone to update on WIFI only.0 -
Do you have Location Access set on? That can use a fair bit of data.0

This is what i dont get , on my old phone i'm sure i used it the same and didnt used hardly any of my data usage.
something is wrong i'm sure.
i hardly have any apps on my phone, and where do i find 'location access' ?.....settings?
Edit , right i've found location services, this was on so i've switched that off.
also on is traffic data collection and location based adverts??? what ever the hell they are , have switched these off too, plus site permissions locations setting. Idid have location switched on on my old phone though and this wasnt happening.
It's a Q10 Blackberry. ...and thus far havent worked out how to delete stuff i've saved to homepage or the bookmarks as it's different to last one........****** phone!
how do i see what apps are updating or running in the background?
jeeze how many questions will i have ?!?....thanks folks.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
Me again,
Right , thinking about it i have noticed the location services symbol on quite a bit and have wondered why. maybe switching this off will have helped or sorted it.
Rant over , it's been doing my head in...:D:mad:Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
Just for an experiment I tried resetting my phone's data counter and browsing the site.
I've a Windows Phone so there may be differences but I note:- The MSE site doesn't automatically come up in a "mobile" version, unlike other vBulletin sites I've used. It's the same page as I get on my laptop, just shrunken, with all the stuff down the side (Twitter feed etc.) and photos.
Is there a mobile version of the MSE Forum? How do we get to it?I suspect there is syncing going on for apps because there is no way a mobile version, or low res version should be eating so much data. - To bring up the Techie Stuff forum, and then view the first page of a multi page thread is very roughly 0.2 MB (phone's counter isn't very accurate).
- So if you looked at the index and a page 100 times a day, 30 days in a month, that's 0.6GB, so it's not totally outrageous to say too much MSE Forum browsing could use a big chunk of your allowance.
- There are options in User CP (then go to Edit Options) to turn off images and avatars, which would probably save some bandwidth for the Forum content (but not the stuff round the edges).
However if your phone is using data when it's just sitting still. there's probably something else eating your bandwidth as well.0 - The MSE site doesn't automatically come up in a "mobile" version, unlike other vBulletin sites I've used. Right,
I have switched loads of stuff off thanks to the suggestions on here and it does seem to have slowed down data use, it's much slower now when i'm not actually using the phone as have been checking every hour or so.
Sorry, but another question (have been on various blackberry sites at work to hunt out next question but couldn't seem to find the answer).....i've been into the security section, What are all these 'trusted' certificates I have?. haven't got a clue what any of them are and not thing i've looked up. Do I need them? N have tried to delete them but haven't as yet worked that out. There's all sorts of weird stuff i've never heard of along with things like equifax and stuff I have heard of but not looked up.
Sorry to be a pest, I will go away eventually I promise.
Thanks.
And there's no way i'm doing 100 pages a day 30 days a month! So don't think it's me using this site as this place didn't use loads on previous phone. Have also managed all Apps and knocked off most permissions. By the time i've finished nothing will have permission to do anything....lol.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0
