Mobile phone data usage.

Hi,

I keep getting txts from my provider saying i'm going over my limit, which never used to happen. However I do tend to just keep my self logged into this site now all the time, rather than logging on and off. Is this the reason? I thought you had to be downloading stuff etc?...but then I have no idea to be honest about these things.

Thanks.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

Usage usually covers uploading and downloading. However as a general rule unless this forum is somehow set to auto refresh constantly (not through a forum option, either browser or something else) and you have a tiddly usage limit, then this forum wouldn't be doing it. Logged in, or not doesn't affect usage, it's loading it that counts.

What else are you doing on the phone? Video watching adds up, skype video calling, loads of picture sites can easily add up, as can general every day surfing all the time too. Watching TV/Catchup TV and films are a massive usage stealer on mobile phone connections. Throw in tethering and this can increase it as well.

What is your limit on the phone, and what do you do with it on a day to day basis?

    I have 1GB.

I don't watch or download anything. I mooch about on this site loads though, and always searching google. I'm not sure I do this any more than last year or year before though, but the usage has gone up massively , which is what I don't get.

Would O2 be able to tell me what i'm using it on?...and thanks for reply.

Jumping from board to board/thread to thread? Would that do it/count as up loading ?

  • You can go on the O2 mobile site from you mobile and that will tell you how much data you have used/left.

Does O2 give you daily usage statistics? You could try experimenting - uninstall mse for a day etc and see if anything makes a noticeable difference. Is your phone set to only allow updates over wifi?

You don't have to download. Streaming uses data, uploading does, simply loading a web page or sending an email does. It's not downloading that is measured, it's total data usage, in both directions.
There are loads of free programs that you can install to monitor your data usage.

Thanks for replies folks. Yep I can see how much I use was just confused as to how I was using it.

Macman........that must be it then. spending too much time on here instead of getting on with stuff!....lol. it also means I must be spending more time than usual here. I used to only use a quarter of my allowance.

    Thank you.

If it's an Android phone it should show data usage down to the day with a split of usage by application directly from settings/data usage

Can't find data usage on it. But, have not used the phone for over an hour and it's still using data ?? Still logged onto here though, and several tabs open, is the tabs open doing it?
