Bump in Supermarket Car Park

Options
Hello
Yesterday evening I was picking up my son when I reversed and stupidly rand into the side of a car. It was early hours of the morning and had no pen and paper to write my details on to leave under the wiper. I drove home quickly and got the pen and paper and when I got back the car had gone. I then rang the police and reported what had happened. They said that if the person contacted them they would put them in contact with me. I have not heard anything from them at all today and I am not sure what this means, as if I had found my car damaged I would ring the police straight away. Do you think I being premature in thinking they are doing nothing about it and where do I stand if I hear nothing this week.

  • You have done everything you could have done to be honest, i think its just a case of waiting now to see what happens, they might have thought they would never trace you so id just sit back and wait to hear from anyone ie the police just incase its in the system and not been investigated yet.

I am hoping to be able to sort it without going through the insurance as it is my sons policy and I am just a named driver and I don't want to mess it up for him. I am frightened that they might go direct to my insurers without my say so, is this allowed and do I have a choice of what to do.

You've reported it to the police, wouldn't worry about it from here.

Remember to let your insurer know though for information purposes. If they go through insurance companies you can reimburse them to preserve your no claims. Or if the driver contacts you then you can skip this step and stump up yourself. It'll still be classed as an 'accident' though and declarable.
  • How would they know who you are insured with ?
    Owing on CC £00.00 :j

The Police took my Reg No so I assumed they would be able to check the Insurance details and give it to them. Although I didn't get the Reg number of the car that I bumped into as I just assumed it would still be there when I got back as it was 2.15am and the place was deserted.

I wouldn't tell my insurers anything at this stage.

If they were going to be dishonest about it, why go to the police at all?
  • If you didn't /couldn't give the reg no to the police, if it was reported by the other party then it's a bit of a guessing game to match the vehicles.

Police don't play guessing games. It would probably be dismissed as bad luck sir!
