I have a small town garden and put out peanuts and fat balls. My favourite visitors are a flock of long tailed tits, around 10 of them that visit several times a day and whizz round the garden like faeries on speed!

mixed wild bird seeds from the factory shop atm are only £ 1 more expensive than at B & M. The contents are looking better somehow, B & M's now have some weird red pellets, maybe fat, in them and as my hens are also helping themselves I maybe better stick to less "weird" looking ingredients. I'll compare the labels when I get it in from the car.

JethroUK - that looks AMAZING, where was it from ?

I've got 1 feeding station that has 3 x 4 way feeders on it (seed mix, sunflower hearts, nijer seeds). The smaller birds are slowly using it more. I'm off this weekend so can stand and watch them for a bit

I have a larger one for the from garden with three twist sections. The sparrows and robins love it. However, the seeds can go mouldy in it so I don't ever fill it. So in some ways it's no better than having smaller ones. I've just emptied one of my smaller ones that I only did a week ago and some of the seeds had gone mouldy too. Maybe the time of year as its so damp and grey.

We are having the same problem with our bird feeders and peanuts. I think the constant wet weather made the problem worse this year so it pays to only half fill the feeders so that less is wasted.

birds can pick up infections and diseases from bird feeders so it pays to clean them out regularly and not let any mould lurk in them.

I think I saw a goldcrest in a tree between Morrisons and the main road! I'll be taking my binoculars next time I go shopping!

I've bought loads of leftover packs of Christmas nuts - some are bags of mixed nuts. The squirrel has 'rejected' the pecan and brazil nuts but is happy with hazelnuts and chestnuts. Most are buried first and 'he' only eats two when here.

I've been away from home for six days and, of course, the feeders were totally empty when I got back. I went out in the dark last night and filled them up, sprinkled some suet pieces and mealworms around and left some suet balls out too. The birds just swoop on the whole monkey nuts and they are taken very quickly.

The bird water 'bath' is overflowing with rain water, I just need to empty it out sometimes and give it a clean.

It's the RSPB's bird count weekend coming up.

Thanks Gers for the alert re bird count. Had some unusual birds about this last few weeks, plus the usual pigeons, blackbirds, sparrows etc.
"Ella" is back, a female blackbird who waits outside neighbours back door for feeding.
