Any keen bird feeders out there?

Just had a quick look about long tailed tits on the RSPB website and it seems that its common for them to be in colonies of around 20.0

Do look at all the tit species this time of year and towards winter. They tend to flock together to maximise the chance of finding food. Especially later in winter when food is scarcer. Willow and coal tits may join them even goldcrests and don't forget to look for the bramblings.Back on the trains again!0

I would love to see gold finches in our garden but there are none in our area (although I have seen them a few miles away)
You can get 75g bags of mealworms in Poundland at the moment and I sprinkle them on the ground for the sparrows. We watched a robin one day pick up five or six of them and fly off to its nest with them0 -
Thought I would bump as we head into winter.
We've had some building work which has disturbed the feeders a little, but there still seem to be birds in the garden. Sparrows as always and 2 or 3 male blackbirds here regularly which is new, we had one male which came a lot earlier this year, but these seem to be together which I haven't seen before. We also saw what looked like a woodpecker at the top of our neighbour's tall conifer rode.
What about everyone else? Are the birds back?
too many comps..not enough time!0 -
Thanks for the bump chickeroonee! Yep! They are back. It tends to be a flummox (?) around 7 to 8am then a return visit before dusk. A scattering of sparrows, occasional blue & great tits, chaffinches and blackbirds plus robins and dunnocks.Collared doves usually throughtout the day also magpies.
As before, don't assume everything you see is commom or garden variety, look for; bramblings (with the chaffinches) and check out the tit flocks for anything unusual.Back on the trains again!0 -
Yes Chick, they back lots of sparrows, very tame, too many to identify.
Finches further down garden . Started making up fat balls. Lard from Tesco 49p . Time to get camera ready.0 -
It went very quiet in our garden for a few weeks, but they're back now. we have goldfinches visiting every day, which I'm pleased about, lots of sparrows, blackbirds and doves, and the odd chaffinch and great tit. Also saw a robin this morning. Sunflower hearts are still the favourite !0

I have some Bullfinches in my garden but they don't seem to visit the feeders0

WatsonNimrod -how lucky you are!
I'm guessing they have enough natural food in your garden atm. They may visit your feeders as it gets colder. Not sure what their speciality food is though.
Thats a bird I don't see very often when out and about (never had one in the garden) but I did get a lovely view of a pair in an old quarry area near me earlier this year.Back on the trains again!0 -
despite hanging out the nyger seed, the goldfinches that visit our front garden & our neighbour's front & back, don't want to feed on them.
Haven't yet seen the solitary pheasant that visits us.
We've had lots of blue tits - haven't seen many great ones recently though.
Had a couple of jays picking off the acorns recently and saw 3  magpies trying to chase them off yesterday although I never see them eating acorns.
I got some free mealworms from the local garden centre so the robins have been enjoying them and the blackbirds are tucking into the apples left on the trees.0
