It probably does just fine, but you may need a new router as yours is knackered.

Unfortunate that you thought you were getting cable bb, I can see this adding to your frustration. Do you live in a cabled street? I've had fiber optic bb for a decade now and it is very good. I pay for 30mb and get 29-31mb when I do speed tests. The only issue I have ever had is similar to yours with the service intermittent and dropping out- a new wireless hub from Virgin sorted this straight away. Good luck getting it all sorted!

    Thank you,

I suppose then I need to either buy one myself (and ask on here for advice for a simple one that won't confuse me) or go back to Virgin and let them send me one and sign up for another 12 months.

You are getting the expected speed for basic ADSL, so presumably you can't get ADSL2 or ADSL2+ (LLU) in your location.

It does appear that you could get Virgin superfast is it states that "it’s easy to turn you on" in response to my first link.

So you are paying VM for a BT-based ADSL connection (Virgin National), which requires you to pay line rental to them.
But you said in post that your phone isn't with VM?
So who is it with? Do you have another BT-based line for your landline?

I have a normal BT line and we pay our line rental to them.

    What makes you think that?

How did you manage to sign up to VM National in a street that has cable available? Did you move from a previous adress that had cable to one that did not, were transferred onto Virgin National-and VM have subsequently cabled up your street? That's the only scenario I can think of for this.
I'd either ask VM to put you onto cable FOC or ditch them and use a alternative ADSL service.
How did you think that the service had got worse since the 'superfast optic upgrade', since you are not on any form of fibre optic service-just good old BT copper wires? Did VM tell you that you were being upgraded?
How is your broadband service actually titled on your VM bill?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

My guess as they have "been with them for years and years". You don't always get upgraded automatically...

    I'm 1.2 miles.

They were going to convert me to cable, but they started the spiel about running cabling across our drive (it can't be buried and we have a fairly substantial drive) and how it would upset Sky and BT- and my husband said no.

We had a message back in the spring about work being done and how we would lose our service due to upgrades. I lost internet for two days, and managed to get back online , but then it went out again for about 36 hours- and they said it was the upgrade work and they reset everything again.

It's timing out again now so I'm probably going to have to give up here soon.
