That's a BT (wholesale) line then. What is your IP Profile? (as provided by the BT stats).

EDIT: your IP Profile is 6.45Mbps. This is the upper limit for download speed.
As the stats provide upstream data to Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps
This implies you are on (tech stuff follows!) 21CN ADSL+2 (this is NOT cable)

You should be able to get between 9Mbps and 13Mbps so your speed is a bit slow. As you get connection problems there must be something wrong between the main socket and the telephone exchange. We need your router stats next (as already requested)

PS. you may or may not know this but you should be able to get cable where you are.

I'll look for my bills and see if that tells me what I am paying for, however I would expect a service that works- surely?

The first link returns:
Your street is already connected, so it’s easy to turn you on

So you could have Virgin superfast broadband rather than Virgin National (ADSL) basic broadband then!

Our new Collections come with:
The fastest broadband in the land
With speeds of up to 120Mb, no-one else comes close

the second link shows:

Netgear DG834/ DG834G
You need to have firmware at least v 1.05.
From the web interface http://192.168.0.1
> Router Status
> "Show Statistics" Button

alternatively click this link --> Show Statistics.

Click on the above Show Statistics link and cut and paste the line stats here.

Default username = admin, password = password

Notes on the DG834(G).
v1 and v2 are based on the TI (Texas Instruments) AR7 ADSL chipset.
v3 is based on a different TI AR7 chipset and has different firmware.
v4 has a broadcom chipset (BCM6348 V0.7). As such firware versions are also different.
v5 uses a Conexant chipset (CX94610).
New firmware released Feb 2007. - Bug fixes in DG834 and DG834G Release Version 3.01.31_UK/3.01.32 software, which cures the frequent drop outs. More info.
Netgear owners may also be interested in a nice little tool called RouterStats for monitoring their SNR Margin.

Please contact your system administrator for the correct information.

I'm going to try an earlier password

It probably does just fine, but you may need a new router as yours is knackered.

Unfortunate that you thought you were getting cable bb, I can see this adding to your frustration. Do you live in a cabled street? I've had fiber optic bb for a decade now and it is very good. I pay for 30mb and get 29-31mb when I do speed tests. The only issue I have ever had is similar to yours with the service intermittent and dropping out- a new wireless hub from Virgin sorted this straight away. Good luck getting it all sorted!

So you are paying VM for a BT-based ADSL connection (Virgin National), which requires you to pay line rental to them.
But you said in post that your phone isn't with VM?
So who is it with? Do you have another BT-based line for your landline?
Sounds like you need to bundle these services up. Virgin National is a pretty pointless service, you probably have much better LLU options.
If for example you already have Sky TV, you can bundle your line rental, calls and broadband with that.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
