  • Just had the Chimney swepted for the first time. Not as much soot as i thought sweep sid stove is burning as well as possible. Used very dry logs last year and have 2 years worth drying in the garden. Just have to keep on top of supply and take what you can when you can.

There is a thread about cleaning the door etc Find a damp cloth and ash as good as anything.

I know pallets are readly available and great for starting but wonder if you need more dense dry wood to stop alot of tar build up.

Anyone heard this? Our sweep says he puts the odd can in the fire to burn says he has heard there is something in the metal that helps when sweeping?

  • I bought a log fire some 35 years ago best thing I have ever bought, I live only a few yards from the sea so drift wood is plentiful I also buy a load of logs from a local farmer once a year.

All this talk of wood burning stoves is bringing back memories of when I had my lovely coal fire, we had to get rid of it and get a gas fire, because when the wind blew in a certain direction the smoke used to come down the chimney and fill the house:eek: even though we had the chimney swept regularly. Would you get this problem with a stove, I would love proper flames in the fire place again.:D

I dont think you would get this problem although it does advice on mine not to use coal in certain conditions like fog etc. The burners are sealed when door is closed, also we have a cowl fitted to stop rain coming down

Quote from manual of the stove

Don’t run the stove in mild weather with coal : Under
certain circumstances (e.g. fog and repeated thaw)
the chimney will not draw sufficiently well and thus
be at the origin of asphyxia.
Awaiting better weather circumstances, don’t use
    any coal but only wood.

Hello, thank you for your reply. I wasn't thinking about using coal again, just wondered if the smoke problem would occur with a wood burner.

What other fuels can you burn on them, or are they purely just for wood? seems like a daft question I know :o

You can get them to burn wood, coal and some even do peat and oil. Alos get electric ones.

I fine wood logs are best, I got my first order a large pickup load for £50 suppose to be seasoned.

OOh:p it would have to be real flames;) I have a fake gas fire at the moment, nice enough, but no comparison to my previous coal fire. A wood burner seems like a good compromise, my husband loves collecting logs off the shore and he can't do that with gas:rotfl: .

    Thanks for your reply

  • Hi

We got a Tiger stove to replace a very bland "real flame" gas fire.

I notice you can now get these for about £320 deliverd from http://www.stovesareus.co.uk/catalog/evergreen-tiger-multifuel-woodburning-stove-p-83.html?osCsid=94892fd82fa2ba39044c231eeee05d2e

The stove cost about £450, the opening out of the fireplace and construction of the hearth and wooden mantle cost about £500.

We didn't need any liner, the smoke test (lighting a smoke cone and checking upstairs rooms and loft for smoke) proved that chimney was sound.
A bottom plate was fitted to prevent ash from dropping out, and the stoves flue directed into a hole cut in this.

I would recommend getting a multifuel as it gives more options for what you can burn, Coal gives off more heat and is good for getting it going quickly, wood can then be added for a longer burn.
We also burn paper logs, produced from old newspaper of which we get a constant supply from our 3 free local papers.

I would avoid the logmakers that need you to use water, longwinded and messy.

Get one of these, cheaper and better with no drying time!
You stuff it with newspaper and use the plunger to compress into round log which is then twisted at both ends and ready for burning!

I believe that you can get some woodburning stoves where the back piece of firebrick is replaced by a small boiler. which I believe can then be plumbed into your central heating system using a pump and used to supply your radiators.

    Hope this helps!
