Options
Hope i've posted this in the right place. I am looking at getting a wood burner and wondered if anybody has got one. I am hoping to get it to do the heating through the winter months. Are they any good. Any advice or ideas would be great!

  • Hi poppy cat. Are you having a liner fitted up the chimney? This is what i have been told that i need due to the age of the house.

Hi I hope not it could cost us extra £700 and cant afford. Along with burner and a cheap surround basically the burner is in the chimney and some fireproof material it will costs us following

    £489 (Stockton 5) multi burner

£242 Removal of excisiting MDF fireplace, hearth and line with pyroc and fitting, EXC VAT
£148 register steel plate (not sure what that is)
£105 inc VAT for a pressure test chimney

    Liner is £728 inc Vat

Excuse mistakes I been working all evening and am very tired

The register plate is the horizontal plate that the flu from the fire goes into. This plate then forms a seal to prevent fumes billowing down and entering the room via the throat of the fireplace.

I would definately get the flu lined, unless it has a suitable and servicable lining there already. I had to ask a neighbour to a property I own to get his flu lined as fumes were leaching out from his chimney into my property! I could smell when his tenants had the fire on.

If you do go ahead, I can recommend getting a paper log maker. You soak old newspapers, cardboard etc in water then pop the mush into the press and out comes a soggy brick. Once dried, you've got free fuel for your wood burner. They go for under £20 on ebay, we got one in winter and, while I've not had the 2 hour burn time claimed, it was definitely worth it. Especially as our council is now on fortnightly bin collections ;)

A friend of mine just had 2 clearview stoves installed and they are brilliant.
MASSES of heat and very good looking burners!!

He goes round skips every week and collects wood. Costco also do those 3 hour burning logs that cost about £1 each.

Boils water fast too for some tea!!

I'm getting one myself , when I can afford it!

What area aere you in because I will be able to get you the guys number who installed my friends two.
    Problem of the week!

My laptop keeps on telling me it has an ip address conflict with another computer on my network and its driving me mad trying to sort it out!!! Any suggestions PM me please!

We had a stockton installed (4 or 5 I can't recall which) about 6 months ago. A couple of observations:-
Lining - Trust your installer, if not them a local sweep. They should have an idea about the state of your chimney and let you know if a liner is needed. if they both say yes, you might have to find more £££. We were lucky, both the sweep and fitter said our chimney was in perfect nick. The pressure test should tell you if there's any leaks which will nessecitate a liner.
Fitting - quote sounds about right, I'm in london and all the fitting came into about £350 incl hearth etc.
Firewood - try to get yourself a source. Both garages and DIY places sell bags of logs at around £3 -£3.50 which last about 3 evenings. Expensive way to go. Try friends / colleagues to see if anyones cutting down trees etc. And lastly, join your local freecycle groups, quite often see logs going on them.
Using - They can take a while to get going. My advice is to give them a LOT of wood to kick them off (each time you light it) and only when it's really hot start to feed the wood in a little less often. I tried slow feeding from the start and the fire never really gets going, keeps going out etc.
    All in very happy!

We had a BIG woodburner at our last house, in 15 years only ever paid for wood ONCE!! Rest of time was old windows. pallets (they're best to get, plenty around, burn well & easy to cut), old fence panels, floorboards.

You'll even find small builders keen to give you their scrap wood, 'cos they'll pay to dispose of it usually!

We did, though, stop using it for heating, when we installed gas, as it meant constant filling & was inconvenient, if you weren't around to do it, during the day.

We've got one in mind for our new house - once we find one to move to!!
