And in the interests of balance I gave that reg cleaner a try as I'd not heard of it before and I have to say its a pretty poor piece of software and certainly would NOT recommend it to anyone. That isn't personal preference.
You're right it isn't personal preference (my apologies), it's personal opinion. Whether I agree with your choices or not it's still just opinion (even with reasoning). Like I said there have been quite a few posts by people going into depth as to why AVG is far worse than Avast. They're no more right than you but vice versa. I'm sure 0rsen will take your comments aboard (he's that kind of chap) but there's no real right or wrong here and very difficult to make factual statements about one program being better than another. I actually have the same opinion as you about CWshredder. Not sure about the defragmenting though, if you're going to do it is there really any advantage over Windows defragmenter? Was only just reading about how defragmenting was actually pointless and the advantages are all perceptual and wouldn't really be detected in a double blind test."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

My comment about NOT being personal preference, or opinion, were in regard to CWShredder (which you agree with) and that reg cleaner, which really is quite poor. I gave a recommendation for NTRegOpt instead of Auslogics reg defrag as it has a reg backup program included, partly in case any damage is caused by the reg defrag but is useful in itself as an addition to System Restore. And I gave a warning about a particular option in Eraser that can kill your OS, though I still recommend the program itself. The rest were all things I said I'd add as alternatives, wheres the problem in that (I even agreed that there were some excellent recommendations on that site).
With regards to defragging, defragging every week or two probably won't result in any difference, its still worth doing every month or two. My recommendation for JKDefrag was because I found Auslogics does no better than Windows defrag. JKDefrag adds an element of file sorting to improve disc access times and ultimately disc life.0 -
Avast Pros = Boot scan for XP, better resident shield, P2P Sheild, Messenger Shield, also a better update scheduler.
Avast Cons = A few false positives.

AVG Pros = A nice Icon
AVG Cons = Wont do all the above as Avast Pros.

Ok, go ahead and turn a perfectly useful thread into a pointless "my AV is better than yours" thread. If just one person finds my post useful I'm happy, I'll butt out now and leave you to your childish !!!!!ing.

I apologise if my post came across as argumentative (it was why I included what I agreed with you upon). I usually suggest AVG and Avast to people as two equal alternatives. I was simply responding about your statement of AVG instead of Avast rather than it being an additional alternative. In fact I actually used AVG myself rather than Avast before I got NOD32 so I'm hardly being prejudice about your statement with a "my AV is better than yours" as I actually preferred AVG to Avast.
As for the defragmenting, I never said there was no point doing it, I was talking about an article I was recently reading (PCFormat, July issue I think), not my own opinion. My own personal opinion is that the windows defragmenter is sufficient (if you are going to defrag) and I didn't think there was going to be any practical advantage with additional 3rd part apps."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

As the link seems to have drifted of the Richter scale, I shall put it back on for the benefit of those who missed it. http://www.artus-fh.co.uk/source/Freebies%20Page.html
All good stuff. Help yourselves!

Erm, what's the problem, it was a chat tip originally, also, the OP is not making money out of this, there are no revenue streams on the page, i.e. adsense etc. It is a free to use resource, and it is helpful that the OP bumps this thread to show updates and additions made to the page on his website.

Also your Open Source Windows link is dead - looks like it might be '.com' now instead of '.org', though I'm not familiar with the site so may be a different site altogether.0
