I've financed the whole lot (with help from my parents) and basically have a choice - him or my old house (which I've now realised is far better than this one) and friends.

Just picked out a few key things.

Firstly - have you told him how you feel about his lack of support? Have you said to him why you want his support?

Second bit - have you told him why you feel lonely? Have you said to him you don't know where to start to make friends?

Third bit - You are simplyfying it saying there are only two choices. You can still stay and work on the issues. He wants to work on the relationship and him saying if you move out we are finished is a mans attempt at saying "I want this relationship to work, and you moving out is telling me you don't want this relationship to work. Also - what is stopping you from seeing your old friends now? You can still see them and presumably stay round one of their houses if needs be. Similarly, they can always visit you? Just think you have a rose tinted glasses on about how "good" it was, and it is more about wanting to change your current situation rather than wanting to go back to where you did live. Face up to your issues, and deal with them.
