Water doesn't push springs through the cover, as per a "mechanical bed".
It's qualities do not change, so that rules that 1 out too.
So, a guess, the cover wore out?????????????????????
Ok then, here's the explanation.
Mine had soft sides and had a high stability mattress.
Soft sides made the bed easier to get in and out of, but this edge was only a few inches wide and my habit of sitting on the side did eventually take its toll.
You can choose how stable the mattress is, which is basically how much you want the water to be able to move about. This ranges from the water sloshing about a lot, to almost no movement at all.
Mine got its stability from rows of fibres in the mattress (no idea what these were made of). They allowed the water to pass through but stopped it from being able to just slosh about. They got a little less effective over time.
The vinyl mattress had stretched a bit and the filling point had started to leak a little as well.
My bed was bought 15 years ago and manufacturing has no doubt moved on, but I believe the recommended lifespan is still generally 10/15 years.
So yes, they do wear out. I will probably go back to a waterbed at some stage in the future.
There's lots of info on here http://www.waterbed.co.uk/faq.html0 -

By split bladder I assume you mean it isn't 1 mass of water sloshing about, it is 2 or more separate "bags".
I read "split bladder" and had a horrible flashback to your earlier bed :rotfl:
Nope, just the one big bag unless you've chosen one which has two, so two people can have different stability levels.0 -

Then you and Pinkypants are talking at cross purposesI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Yes apologies, Pinkypants did say they have a two bag system.
However my point is that they are just big bags - the size of at least a single bed mattress.0 -
what sort of bed do you use? Does king bed have supports in middle? if not add these supports and you will find mattress to be a lot more supportive....0

Yes it is 2 separate "bags" of water. Main advantage is that we don't disturb each other in the night quite as much as there is less side sloshing. Also each bladder can be set at different temperatures.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
Thanks for the recommendation Pinkypants but I'm after a mattress only not a divan. I realise the Vi spring are very expensive even on ebay but some sellers seem to be selling ex Vi John Lewis ones which I assume are ex display or returns? They list them as new but not sure that's true!0

I'm sure vi-sprung would love to know that their product is being sold on ebay!
As for the Crystal 3000, yes you can buy it as a mattress only.

Pinkypants, thanks for the link. Funny how the mattress alone is the same price as the whole bed on the other site. Would really like to not suffer with a bad back for long so the quick lead time is very appealing. Was also looking at the Kozeesleep Opal for £398 which can be delivered in a few days. Any views on this mattress?0
