Always change the locks after a lodger leaves/evicted. When we had lodgers we would regularly evict them after 1 week of no rent. I.e as soon as the deposit was spent their stuff would be out of the door and the locks were changed. I had three sets of locks that I would just cycle through the doors as needed.
