Why on earth would you make life harder than it needs to be?

Because bailiffs are scum and (s)he doesn't wish to assist them?

As I said, I can understand why others would be happy to prove they are not someone else to strangers that knock on their door with unverifiable credentials.

I wouldn't, I'd see it more as entertainment rather than making life harder. I'm happy to show ID to those with with the authority to demand it and will gladly do so.
I won't show it to anyone who simply claims to.

I regularly cycle 100 miles+ non-stop in the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District, that's making life hard :)

This, exactly. It's called a point of principle, something that goes way over the heads of some people.

    And it matters why?

Because it is bloody irritating, that's why.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Why are baliffs scum In most cases they are doing a job that needs doing. Unless you think people should never pay their bills that is.
In this case it appears that the lodger is the scum.

You don't get to refer to a whole class of people as "scum" and then get to be taken seriously when pretending that you'll do something as a point of principle.
