Sorry not very Techy does this apply to all Broadband or just Broadband via the phone line. I use cable broadband and haven't noticed any change/slowing of my connection.
Only for ADSL and ADSL2+ over copper.

if that was the case, I'd be getting dial up speeds, and would have gone through many routers.

there was a time before everyone had routers, when people disconnected and connected all the time without a speed degradation.
That was when most people were on fixed speed connections. Variable speed connections rely on the DSLAM to negotiate the best speed based on line conditions. Multiple disconnections will affect this.

The speed negotiated depends on line conditions at the time, rebooting the router can improve the speed.
In some cases, if your current speed is dire, then yes a reboot can result in a new faster sync. However, if it does go in the wrong direction, it can result in terrible speeds which can only be rectified by a DSLAM reset which can only be done by the supplier, and must be followed by a 2 week re-training period for the line.

Always best to leave the modem on. Shut off the wireless if you wish, that's where most of the power goes anyway.

I suggest people check their router sync speed and try it for themselves over a few days, switching off overnight is unlikely to kill the speed, (if you do it 40 times an hour it might), but will save electricity.

just rebooted my router, sync speed went up by 1%

I always turn it off if I'm out and definitely at night. Same with TV/lamp/kettle etc. I switch off at the socket. Only thing I leave on is the SKY box cos its often recording something.

I leave mine on as I have a number of Belkin WeMo switches which "talk" via the wifi to allow me to control devices around the home by time or via my iPad / iPhone. Specifically this allows me to only heat the house when i am on the way home, rather than when i thought I was going to be on the way home. The 2 times are sometimes very different!

All good points, but worth noting that fibre broadband takes 24-48hrs to get "up to speed" following a power cut - I have tried it and it is true - so as I am paying good money for the fast speed, the turning off/on thing is not practical to ensure I get the benefits from the fibre speeds.

Good question and good debate btw. :)

My old one I always use to, but my current one doesn't always seem to find the internet again when I turn it back on so I only turn it off when I go away for a few days.
  • I don't tend to bother, but as a student living next to the uni, I'm usually only out for a couple of hours at a time :) Over the holidays when I go, everything gets turned off except the fridge but it's just too much hassle to do it every day when I leave.

If I had a master switch for all of it, that would be really useful!!
