Oh good I'm just going to write down all I know then and a covering letter. How does it work with childrens passports, i'm separated from my youngest childrens father and hes a schedule 1 offender (he hurt the children and myself) and hasnt seen them for 12 years. I know the date we married and divorced and his full name and I think I know his town of birth (boston lincs) will I need anything else and they wont contact him will they?

Well, they didn't contact DD's father at all. And there wouldn't have been a problem if they had, anyway. Just include what you can, along with a second explanatory letter. Even if they did, the Data Protection Act prevents them from releasing details of your location, IIRC.

If they need anything else, they will let you know.

I know why ive been putting it off so long now, its quite complexed isnt it. How long does a passport last for and I assume it will be much simpler for me to renew when i need a new one as all the security checks will have already been done?

Ten years for you, five for children, I think. It'll be on the government website, anyhow.

And yes, anything requiring ID is easier to do, including renewals, once the first passport is in your possession.

wow thats exactly the same as me except they said to write a covering letter to explain aswell, only thing im having problems with is my fathers details as I dont know his date of birth and hes now dead so I cant ask him, they advised me to ring the registry office in Ireland to see if they could help me but is it essential I have hi date of birth as I am automatically a British citizen as I was born here before 1982?

I think we are including a covering letter as my husband's birth certificate is a work of fiction. I'm hoping we can cover all this in an interview

Now the next dilemma...... who do I get to countersign the photo? I cant think of any professional who has known me for 2 years (only lived here 3 years) except the GP but lady at post office says they dont tend to do it anymore. Only been with dentist just over a year, kids have only been in their current school a year, no health visitor as kids too old now, Im not employed ive been a carer for my disabled daughter for 3 years and home educate her, dont have a social worker or know local police and dont have a solicitor..... really cant think of anyone past or present :(

Any of your neighbours got suitable jobs? I sign for quite a few of mine (I have lived here a long time now, as have they and I'm a professional). Any kind of responsible/managerial job should do. What about the lady at the Post Office?

Other option, explain your problems to the practice manager at your GPs surgery and they may sign for you; they usually charge but given your story they might not. I would sign for you;)

I don't see why not; with the proviso that whoever countersigns your application must themselves have a valid passport.
