How can I not be British when I was born here? they had me many years after they moved over here (over 10 years after they'd been living in the uk i believe).
I rang the passport advice line and they said because ive kept part of the name on my birth certificate (the middle name on there is my first name) to write my now name as my name and maiden name as any previous names ive been known by and attach a covering letter explaining the situation and how ive never used my birth certificate name plus any ID i have in my first name (provisional licence, bank statements and marriage certificate which states on it that I was previously known as....then my birth name) as this will all link in so they can see im the same person. They also said to put any details down that I know about my birth parents and explain they are now deceased. Regarding my childrens passport they said its best to apply at same time (and also explain the situation regarding their father in the covering letter) so I dont have to write a separate letter and go through it all again sending in documents etc, they wont need to contact my ex just need to verify his details so they know he's british.
Not looking at going abroad until next year so i'm giving myself plenty of time to get passports sorted. Hope to apply for them next month when I have enough funds and once thats all done then i'll start another thread on here entitled 'where's the best places for our first family holiday abroad' lol0 -

Before 1983, anyone born in Great Britain or Northern Ireland other than the child of a diplomat was automatically British by birth.
From 1 January 1983 an additional requirement was put in place that one parent should be a British citizen or 'settled' in the United Kingdom. Irish citizens are automatically deemed by British law to be "settled" in the United Kingdom.[6] Since 2 October 2000, this is a more favourable status than that given to citizens of other EU and EEA member states. The special status of Irish citizens in the UK comes from section 1(3) of the Immigration Act 1971, the legislative basis for the Common Travel Area.
It is not publicised by the Home Office but reference can be found in the Home Office Nationality Instructions"The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -

Ok so I have found a copy of my birth mothers death certificate which gives me her date of birth, place of birth and full name, should I send this as part of my evidence or just wriet the details from it? I have the full name of my birth father and his birth place from my birth certificate but no date of birth for him0

May be worth keeping a photocopy of everything you send to the passport office, not in case they lose it but in case you need it all again for any subsequent passport renewals, also children's passports last for two 5 year periods, although you do pay for 10 years when you apply.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

thought you were my husband as we have had the identical problem and gettting a passport. he was left on the doorstep of his aunt and uncle at 6 weeks old by his mother. His aunt and uncle became his parents and he was known as one name. however his birth certificate says another name. This all came to light when we went to get married and he found his birth certificate. he was allowed to marry in his lifelong name but it says otherwise known as.... the passport agency advised us to complete it in his life long name and submit birth certificate , marriage certificate and national insurance details etc to verify. Also he would have to attend an interview at the passport officeMummy's little miracle born 14th September 20120

wow thats exactly the same as me except they said to write a covering letter to explain aswell, only thing im having problems with is my fathers details as I dont know his date of birth and hes now dead so I cant ask him, they advised me to ring the registry office in Ireland to see if they could help me but is it essential I have hi date of birth as I am automatically a British citizen as I was born here before 1982?
Didn't have to put my father's details down at all - they asked at the interview and I answered that I didn't know. As I said, I got my passport straight afterwards.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Oh good I'm just going to write down all I know then and a covering letter. How does it work with childrens passports, i'm separated from my youngest childrens father and hes a schedule 1 offender (he hurt the children and myself) and hasnt seen them for 12 years. I know the date we married and divorced and his full name and I think I know his town of birth (boston lincs) will I need anything else and they wont contact him will they?0
