I had one of these and when I got into dire straits my Mum would put a wee bit of money on it for food or as a treat sometimes. I never ever spent mine on alcohol because I felt too guilty thinking my Mum gave me that money for food but you can so it depends how much you trust your darling child. I knew a few people who did use theirs to buy alcohol and felt no guilt about that and I knew some people whose parents just reimbursed supermarket receipts in full with alchol on them and all after their kids purchased it - I'd guess they came from a different background to me and didn't see it the same way I did.0 -
Well I definitely haven't wasted my money, my daughter is off in Sept - what a relief. I can happily go and buy the rest of the things she needs. Hope everyone else gets the results they need.0

Congratulations to your DD.
6 years ago for me, kind of made me depressed to realise how old I now am!0 -
I used to live opposite a flat which was shared by students and each year I'd get a knock on the door to ask if they could borrow:
1. Potato Masher
2. Can Opener
3. Bottle Opener0 -

bath towel x2
hand towel x2
Kitchen stuff
crockery
cutlery
scissors
slotted spoon
spatula
colander
chopping board
cheese grater
tin opener
pans (including deep frying pan with lid for things like curry
baking tray
Misc
cleaning products, yes, most people will come with them but it saves them buying
bleach
fairy liquid
surface cleaner
sponges
cloths
bin bags
Then things like photo's for uni id, pins/blue tac for noticeboard in bedroom.
His flat came with oven, fridge, freezer, hob, microwave, kettle and toaster.
When we had moved in him we took him food shopping, in his flat there was enough room for each person to have one freezer drawer and one shelf in the fridge. We bought him those huge bags of rice and pasta, store cupboard essential like sauces, tins of tomatoes, beans, herbs and spices etc. Then we bought him meat, fish, fruit and veg. With the meat and fish we bagged it up and then froze it so when he used it he didn't have to use the whole packet in one go. As he only tends to cook for two he makes big batches and then freezes the rest in either takeaway tubs or just freezer bags so he always has quite a few home made ready meals.0
