I pick up my new Kia Picanto on wednesday 14th, my current insurance policy with direct line auto renewed on 6th august last week, so under their terms i can cancel within 30 days.
Rang direct line today and they were quite expensive so asked if i could cancel, was told i could but only on the day itself.
My cheapest quote is with esure £151 plus can get £25 cashback from topcashback.
Can i start this policy on the 14th then cancel the old policy on the same day once i am in possession of new car?
not sure if i can have 2 policies on 2 different vehicles overlapping even if only for a few hours.
Also Kia salesman says he needs proof that my new car is insured, so i do need to act sharpish:)

Is it because you are part exchanging your current car that you need cover on both?
I would think that you can get your new car covered for around the time you pick it up and cancel direct line, when you get home. An overlap of an hour on different cars should be fine for NCB issues, which is the only real issue here. Your proof of NCB will just state the date of finishing not normally the time.
However I used to work for DL and the cooling off period was 14days then, which will still be fine for 14th if you renewed on 6th, but just to make you aware!
Alternatively esure are likely to be able to add on your existing car on what's called a temporary additional vehicle for a short period I.e a day, but this will cost an additional fee.
Ps. This overlap occurs frequently at renewal as some companies start and finish their policies at renewal at 12pm but the likes of DL started their policies at 0001, 12am . So potentially a 12 hr overlap.0 -
Kia will give you 7 days FREE insurance to get your new car on the road - the dealer should have offered this.
You can arrange it at the following website;
www.kiainsportal.co.uk
Or I think the freephone number is 0800 917 2429.And that my son, is how to waft a towel!0 -

Why. it's none of his business. You bought the car, it belongs to you and it's not his job to check insurance policies.0 -

Pretty sure I had to email a pdf of my insurance before I picked up me new car, didn't question it as I presumed it was to do with VED. It didn't bother me as I wasn't having finance and also wasn't planning on driving without insurance.
BTW Op when I told my insurance I was swapping cars they covered me for both cars for the whole day, rather than a specific time.0 -

But he has the responsibility to supply the car and release it legally for road use off the forecourt, which includes ensuring he is not aiding driving without insurance. Plus they need the insurance to tax and register the car to the owner.0 -

It's legal requirement, they are not allowed to release a vehicle on to the public highway without ensuring that all the documentation is in order, they will also need the insurance certificate to apply for the VED, so, yes it is their business, this applies to new and used cars sold by the trade.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0 -

Yes it is his job. In order to get the road tax apart from anything else.
If to get road tax then supplying evidence on the day its beig collected isn't going to be very useful is it. They should get tax before the day of collection and be covered under their own policy!
People keep saying dealers have a legal duty to check this... I'm not sure if this is true or not but a dealer has never checked mine... So maybe somebody can substantiate this?0 -
