Cupcakes and celebration cakes to the public, ie birthdays, weddings etc
Is that still a viable model?, seems like everyone and their dog have been setting up cupcake business's in the past few years.
If I wanted cupcakes or cakes in general I would now use Costco, huge chocolate fudge cake for under £9 or a local old fashioned bakers who do great artisan breads and old fashioned buns and cakes.0 -
People buy into the person and the bespoke cakes they make, I know that many people don't buy mass produced cakes anymore, they want to feel individual and specialIf you don't ask, you don't get!0

I too hate all of those names, I spent too much time staring at the names trying to figure out what they say.
As DKLS has said, you need to think of something unique that is going to set you apart from the other zillion cake businesses out there and name your place to fit that.
People are beginning to realise that making cupcakes is actually pretty easy with a little bit of practice and a piping bag. So, focusing on really good quality celebration cakes might be better if that is what you are really good at.:A

I think in my house it may get shortened or corrupted to Fandangos cakes.
We also use that as a euphemism for fanny!
So, no votes from me but not knocking your business idea either.Norn Iron Club member 4730 -
Thanks everybody, what you have suggested is what I thought too.. Maybe I should go with my conservative ideas of Cleverclogs Cakes or Mr Husband came up with Herbie's Cakes (our dog is called Herbie).....If you don't ask, you don't get!0

nope none of them but there are so many out there and it is still cheaper to go to costcos
i would specialize in one type of thing and become the person in your area who is known for that type of cakes also is this financially viable i have picked up a duck cake this morning fully frosted for a friends nephews 1st birthday it cost me £20 (no extras for ingredients etc) can you do high quality for low cost? if not then i personally wouldnt bother - if going for wedding cakes make sure to go to all the local fairs and talk to venues get your name around a with other suppliers - wedding dresses suit hires etc
start making and costing cakes now so you have a portfolio you can show people and you can work out how much you would need to charge for each one to be financially worth it - remember ion your costings you need to add in utilities, cake boards and boxes and your time not just the ingredients

I'm sorry, I don't want to keep knocking because I genuinely admire anyone that is willing to go for it and set up their own hobby business but I do think those names are also a bit juvenile.
I like Double mummy's suggestions above, they inspire confidence, make it seem you are an expert at what you do and sound professional - perhaps you could include the town/ village that you live in too to boost local interest?0 -
CelecakeA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I think you are right. But, I also think they are difficult businesses to do well in. There was a fabulous cake shop in Glastonbury that used to supply Harvey Nichols and it closed down, I hope it set up agains somewhere, and if any one here knows, please tell me where, there cakes were great and I'd happily drive to Glastonbury/street to get one again!
Anyway, whati really wanted to say was yesterday I used my iPad as a sat nave for the first time and what amazed me was how many cake and food related businesses were coming up on residential streets, obviously being run from home. Its obviously a very popular idea, how serious any of those businesses actually are of course, who knows, but my husband and I were commenting on the cake proliferation.
I'd certainly do a little market research.. Good luck, its good to see someone being proactive.
