Will your laptop connect to the internet using wireless if the router encryption is turned off?

If this doesn't work then you need to sort out the wireless connection before activating the encryption.

    Click this

    http://192.168.0.1

then put in your user name and password.

click on "wireless settings" on the left of the page that opens and in there is the option to turn off your security settings... Its under security options "Disable" click then click apply.

Its on the same page as your security key..

I've always found that the best way to approach this is from the ground up.
Get the connection working with no security and the work forwards.
I'd suggest that you reset your Netgear to factory settings.

If you are already using the router for wired Internet access then you may not want to do that bit.

Do this by using a paper clip to press the recessed button on the back of the router (between the 4 LAN ports and the ADSL port).

    Now turn the router off.

Unplug any cables from the LAN ports and unplug the ADSL line.

Now plug an ethernet cable from the back of your PC to one of the LAN ports turn on the router and do as Sco0ter says in post 17. At the same time, on the same screen change the SSID name at the top to something personal to you (I'll use WIBBLE as an example). Remember to press the APPLY button at the bottom of the page.
If you're unsure as to whether the settings have stuck then turn the router off and back on.

The wireless light next to the "1" light on the front panels should show green.

Then, in your browser do the http://192.168.0.1 bit again, logon (username "admin" Password "password").

Go back to the wireless page and check the SSID and security settings are as you set them.

Now, on the PC, goto Control Panel, Network Connections.
Highlight "Wireless Netwok Connection" and now in the lefthand panel click "View Available Wireless Networks".

The SSID you created WIBBLE should show up on the list as an "Unsecured Wireless Network".

If it's not there then PANIC.

Now from the "View Available Wireless Networks Screen", in the left hand panel click "Change order of preferred Networks". Unless there are any there you want, delete them all.

Now unplug your ethernet cable from the Netgear.

    Click on WIBBLE to connect.

It should show connected at the top right of this window.
In the network connections screen, at the bottom left you should see an IP address (probably 192.168.0.2).

You won't be able to access the internet yet as the Internet connection settings got wiped out by the router reset (if you did this).

The only thing you will be able to do (hopefully) is to wirelessly connect to the Netgear by keying http://192.168.0.1 into your browser.

If this works then we are making progress.

Don't use the router for any lenght of time configured like this.

If this works then set the encyption back to WPA-PSK.
The manual is a bit unclear here.
My key is 56 characters long consisting of 0-9 and A-F.

Suggest that you key it into a notepad in the PC and use the note pad file to cut and paste the key into both the router and your PC when prompted for it.

Let me know how you get on.

    Cheers
    Don
