Problem with netgear wireless

Can anyone help?

I have just recently purchased a Dell laptop and seem to have problems with my new netgear ADSL2 DGB111G starter kit.

HOW DO I CONNECT TO MY BROADBAND WITHOUT USING MY ETHERNET CABLE.
I can use the internet with my ethernet cable attached to my laptop from my router, BUT if i remove the cable the connection stops?

If the equipment is wireless, why do i need the cable? I would like to use my laptop anywhere in the house.

Do i have to connect the adaptor into my laptop?

Any advice would be gratefull.

cheers
paul

What's the model of the laptop? It almost certainly has wireless built in so you don't need the USB adapter. On Dell's the Fn+F2 key turns on/off the wireless adapter, so make sure it's on for starters.

Connect the Ethernet cable and click http://192.168.0.1, enter user name admin , password is password. Under Setup, click Wireless Settings and tick 'Enable wireless access point' and 'Allow broadcast of name (SSID)' and Apply. Disconnect the cable and see if you can connect wirelessly. If you can you should then enable wireless security (WPA-PSK encryption with a long random network key).

    Thanks for the reply.

The model is a dell 6400 which i purchased 3 weeks ago so it has built in wireless. If i press Fn and F2 a wi-fi appears.

Chippy, i tried your instructions. When I remove the ethernet cable it disconnects me from the internet, a cross appears on the the 2 monitor pictures on the deskbar?
If i click on these screens it gives me a list of networks available...
If i click on the netgear wireless, a new page appears saying "type in the network security key or passphrase for netgear???? "whats this"?
It also tells me to insert the usb flashdrive?

    ANY IDEA`S ????

    If you follow Chippy's instructions:

"Connect the Ethernet cable and click http://192.168.0.1, enter user name admin , password is password. Under Setup, click Wireless Settings"

...now, under Wireless Settings select "WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)" and enter a word of your choice, the click Apply. This is the word you then enter when asked for the key.

I also have the same router and that works for me every time. Sorry for the 'muppet' question but you are typing in the exact same word??
If so, try changing the word in the wireless set up, click apply again and then log in with the new word.
I know I had to do this once when for some reason it wouldn't recognise the original word. I think it also has to be at least 10 or 12 characters but not certain about that.

Before I chip in, just wondered if you had made any progress?

Ps I'm a bit confused about which router you have ADSL2 DGB111G or DG834G.

The DGB111G is a wireless starter kit consisting of the DG834G wireless router and a wireless USB adapter. As the OP's laptop has wireless built in there is no need to use the latter.

I think you're confusing the wireless USB adapter with a USB flash drive. The answer is no, you don't have to connect the USB adapter because your laptop has wireless built in. Press the Fn+F2 keys to enable the wireless - a WiFi light should come on. Is there a wireless icon near the clock? Try clicking it.
