this is going to sound so silly but i forgot to wipe it before i sent it off (ive been massively busy), luckily i only put a few photos which i have already on my old laptops but i only used the actual laptop a handful of times as i hated windows 8.
What should i do if they dont give me money or laptop back? on the reviews ive actually managed to find which isnt many are all horrendous but one person has gone there to get his laptop back which i would do.

It says on the website the send the money off on a monday so fingers crossed. but the bit i was really worried about is the bank info i gave as i chose to be paid by BACS. is there anything they can do with name, address, sort code and account number?

Its not just things like pictures, its if you used the browser on there for buying online that worried me which led me to virtually strip the whole laptop of even an OS, so it was as though it had just been made and not even loaded with windows.

This still wont be enough, if fraudster have the same equipment the police use then even with a blank hard drive they will still be able to retrieve stuff

It's not special police software, something like Recuva is free - if you've just done a format on a drive pretty much all the data will come straight back.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

yes date will be recoverable for a period of time, but if you have formatted several times and used it after each time, the police can retrieve stuff from several formats back even if you have been using it since.

Best thing is to remove the hard drive. I personally have a £40 external HDD from Asda that i removed from the case. I installed win8 on this and thats it. If my PC needed to go in for repair etc. then i just change the HDD over.

Even if you format and then use it for a while that's no guarantee of safety. Take a 1TB drive, re-install Windows 10 times and use it for a bit and chances are at least 500GB of the drive wont have been overwritten, and so the data will come back in a matter of seconds.

The police will either use data recovery software (which derivatives of are freely available on the internet), or (in extreme cases) forensic data recovery solutions (i.e. stripping the drive down and examining the platters).

To have any real guarantee of security (or at least, to have any real knowledge of what the odds of data being recovered are), you need to use some form of proper data scrubbing solution.

This company are a fraud, scamming everyone, stealing laptops. Complaints are stacking up across the internet.

    Report to bbc one watchdog

    I did.

It is the only way to get our money.
  • Hi all,

I am the newest victim of the sellyourlaptops.co.uk scam. I went on the website, put in my laptop details, got the free box sent to my house, sent the laptop away, got all of the legitimate looking emails about the laptop being received and tested etc. The status now says complete but no money is in my account. These people cannot get away with this anymore. I am just off the phone with action fraud who will hopefully start an investigation. But they have said that the more people that complain to them, the greater the chance this will become a serious investigation. So anyone who has been a victim of this, get on the phone to action fraud and let's get these guys and our laptops back!!!
    There number is 0300 123 2040.
