But if going on household income, mine didn't change greatly. My money went down, his went up.

I very much doubt that my household income - single parent low income, 1 child, 1 non-dependant on ESA, is more than the Ops household income. 2 parents, 1 low income, 2 dependant children.

I am just trying to get my head round it all. Its so very confusing.

The problem with using your postcode, is that every council now works out it council tax benefit ( or what ever it is called) independently.
What someone under your council would get is not the same as the same person under a different council would get.

    Quite true:)

However, OP lives in Barnet and the percentage is 8.5% (the minimum anyone pays) which just happens to be the same as my council.

What I couldn't get completely accurate was the council tax bill for the whole year but it was very close - hence the 'ish'.

At least it gives the OP some hope that there has been an error in the email so fingers crossed that he will get a nice surprise when the award letter comes.

As my first reply to your querie, you should not be paying anywhere near the amount you are, it might be the council office don't have the correct info on your income or they made a genuine mistake.

Going a bit off topic here, have you applied for alternative accommodation, via housing associations or the local council? Your rent and CT is very high for a small flat, in fact i'm wondering where the CT rate came from if just a flat?

I hope you get it all worked out soon, but try not to worry just now it's the weekend and little you can do until monday :)

    Very kind words.

Just a quick question, if it is obviously high considering our circumstances (which it is) and say I get a court sumons because I can not pay so much, would I have a leg to stand on? Or is it just up to me to rectify the mistake?

It won't come to that if you visit The CT benefit office and have a recalculation.

Based on what you have said here you are not liable for the amount you think you are.

Talk to a benefit officer first thing monday morning.

The minimum percentage of council tax payable by people on full means tested benefits is zero in Durham.

About 1 in 5 councils still pay 100% council tax support. No idea if this will continue next year.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

First of all I don't blame OP for claiming everything available (I claim everything). However the total income including wife's wages, CTC, WTC and CB is around £1534 net per month or £354 net per week plus 70% of their rent paid.

So payable rent is about £45 per week leaving £309 per week for all other expenses. Based purely on those figures would there still be a council tax benefit? That's equivalent to a salary of £23,000 before tax so would an employee earning that amount also get that benefit?

I am of course assuming my maths are correct!!!
    It's someone else's fault.
