Council tax benefit

Comments

  • Council Tax Benefit was abolished by the Government on the 31st March 2013.

Each local authority now has their own individual Council Tax Support scheme.

You need to contact your council to find out what has happened.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

I calculate your CTS to be approximately £27 per week, so you have to pay around £6 per week. The figure matches with what you think you are getting for the year, so I would suggest you are misreading the letter.

Sorry its so messy, I have exact numbers here, as for housing benefit we got £851.52 on the 29/7 and last payment was £920.99 on the 1/07. So not sure what is going on there. Do they pay every 4weeks or something, but that does not explain why the amount keeps changing.

I wish you were the person that calculated mine. :)

Its not a letter its an email here is the cut and paste

    Dear Mr

Thank you for your email dated 31st July 2013 regarding the instalment plan for the property ........................

To confirm your total council tax bill is £1730.91 with benefits of £27.20.

I have sent a copy of the council tax demand for your reference.

Please note paying by direct debit maybe more beneficial where you can request from the dates; 1st/5th/15th/20th/25th.

As you have advised you are having difficulty paying, I have spread the cost over 12 months to decrease the amount per month.

A bill will be issued shortly with the above transactions.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Yours Sincerely

At some point you will have received an award notification. It is this that we need. The email reads to me that the person has forgotten to write 'per week' after the amount.

I expect where the two cases differ are because you have a non dependent. No disrespect to the OP but I do think they should pay more than they have to, they have a very healthy income, but it's not me that makes the rules ;)

(OP, I am going out now but someone else will be able to help if they can see a copy of the paperwork.)

I agree. Using the turn2us site (albeit using my post code, but using the council tax band relevant) it worked out at £27 ish per week as benefit/reduction.

OP, needs to wait for his award notice if he hasn't received one.

By the way, the equivalent council tax band at that amount per year is Band E!!!!!!!!!!! (and I'm in leafy Kent)

But if going on household income, mine didn't change greatly. My money went down, his went up.

I very much doubt that my household income - single parent low income, 1 child, 1 non-dependant on ESA, is more than the Ops household income. 2 parents, 1 low income, 2 dependant children.

The problem with using your postcode, is that every council now works out it council tax benefit ( or what ever it is called) independently.
What someone under your council would get is not the same as the same person under a different council would get.
