Golder's Green - there are 10 (!) charity shops there within 5 mins walk of the tube station (except for the oxfam towards finchley which is a bit more of a walk) - always good stuff in one of them. Luckily for me on days when I can be late to work I can alter my route to have a quick look around.
Thanks frugglewump. I remember noticing that there were quite a few around there (I travel north on the National Express semi-frequently so have passed through Golder's Green bus station lots of times).

There used to be a couple of good ones on Victoria Street (near where I used to work) including a Sue Ryder shop (which always gives the impression of being exactly the same as the chaotic independent ones!) but they knocked down a couple of blocks to put a new development in, and the charity shop went with it :(

I'll let you into a little secret. Golders Green is, in my experience, one of the best locations in London for charity shops. I think this is because the Hampstead Garden Suburb/Bishops' Avenue flash money brigade donate their stuff there virtually unworn. I have got tons and tons of really nice Jermyn Street/Savile Row clothing from there over the years. Remember though that most of the shops are Jewish and therefore aren't open on Saturday, but are open on Sunday though.

This is probably not very relevant to this thread, so forgive me an off topic post. On Saturday I was in my local cancer research charity shop, moseying about as you do. And there was a pale and tired looking mother trying to find a suit for her adolescent son. Fair enough you may think, but it was for his fathers funeral. I thought it was very sad, that when they should be spending time together mourning they were rooting about in the charity shop looking for something to wear to the funeral. I left feeling humbled.

That is so sad. It has really upset me reading that.
After a blazing row with my husband this morning has made me realise how lucky I am. Should count our blessings.

  • The charity/second hand shops by me are quite expensive and in some cases it is actually cheaper for me to buy it new. Which is annoying as some of the charity shops have got really cool stuff, just don't want to pay £10+ for a second hand top when I can get one for £5!! In Brighton where I go alot, second hand t-shirts can be £20!! Crazy!!!
