hotel accommodation with a teen - few places allow shared rooms ?

Now that DS is 13 - nearly 14, I'm stunned to find that we very few hotels will allow us to book a family room for DH, DS & me for a 1 or 2 night stay away.

Whilst we wouldn't want to go on a fortnight's holiday with all 3 of us together, I would like us to have a couple of nights in London, and I'm desperate to visit Ironbridge & Blist victorian village, and would like to stay over one night in that area.

But looking on the hotel booking websites, it's going to cost us for 2 rooms on these trips. I was expecting we would be able to carry on going in family rooms until DS 16.
Am I the one being unreasonable here? Or is it the hotels/guesthouses.

BTW any recommendations for really nice accommodation in these places would be appreciated.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

When my parents used to come and visit me at uni we often stayed in a family room. I'm sure sometimes we had my older sister there too. Have you tried travelodge/premier inn type places - I'm pretty sure they just look at the numbers of people in the room, not the ages.

yep, both travelodge and premier inn class children as children until they reach the age of 16 so you can book family rooms through them (travelodge will also allow up to 3 adults in a family room).

How about Holiday Inn chain too? Children are classed as under 18 in their family rooms.

eta - I would also suggest changing your search to 3 adults when looking on booking websites, it means you won't get results coming up that you can't use because of maximum occupancy issues etc.

Have you tried booking.com? When you search it asks about guests, click the dropdown and select 'more options', this will then let you select 2 adults and 1 child (giving age) and should bring up a number of options for hotels including those which will offer family rooms.

Ibis have rooms with a double and a sofa bed too.

Even if it is just two adults travelling who aren't a couple we book family rooms anyway regardless of the chain .

I've stayed in many London hotels with three in a room. Where were you getting your info from OP ?

there's a really nice looking youth hostel in Ironbridge, could you get a family room there? I know friends who share a family room at YHs even though the children are 32 and 29 now.

sorry, this is going to sound really picky. I was hoping to find somewhere a bit less soulless than a premier inn/travelodge. I know they're a possibility (altho London availability is tricky)

Youth-hostel doesn't really appeal either, I'm a bit disabled, and need en-suite (or at least own bathroom, so DH can help me in/out of bath or shower).

I'm getting my info from booking.com & such sites. I guess I hadn't thought of booking for 3 adults - to me that seems sleazy !!

Must be your thoughts, I went to Paris with my MIL and SIL and we shared a room.

I wouldnt worry about that, I doubt hotels would batter an eyelid, plenty of people will do it, groups of friends, hens, stags, or like the OP above.

I must be missing something. I've booked/stayed in hotel rooms with 3 adults loads of times, including 3 weeks round California in a different motel each night.

    Why would it be sleazy?

I don't know why, just something I've never done, not casting aspersions on any one who has.
In any case, I just don't think of DS as an adult yet :D !!
