Arrrgh Nits!

We have had them a few times and I have to say the only thing I found that actually worked and got rid was hedrin once. I know it isn't very mse but I spent hours and hours combing my LO's hair with conditioner and nitty comb and they just never went.
In the end I gave in and bought the hedrin and never looked back. You could see them dropping off her hair. Washed it off with washing up liquid as it is really greasy and hair was as good as new!
Must say though, my DD had really long hair so maybe that's why the other treatments didn't work so well.0 -
When Grandaughter had them we tried all kinds to no avail,I then bought a zapper comb from boots,it runs on batteries and you just use it like a nit comb, when it makes contact with nit/egg you hear a noise as it zaps and kills them, very therapeutic lol0

Another vote for Hedrin and Nitty Gritty comb. That was the combo that finally resolved the issue for us. I was told that Hedrin kills the lice rather than poisoning them so they can't develop a resistance to it.0

Yeah I have to agree conditioner and a comb is the best way to go.
I had years of doing it, stepdaughters had them every time they visited, even had them when we went to spain, OHs ex never said anything to us when we picked them up.
Tea tree shampoo and conditioner soon got rid of the little blighters.
I think the Ex soon started using Almond oil on the girls.
One had hair down to her waist and so thick it was a nightmare to do.

Hedrin and a Nitty Gritty comb for me. Remember you can get Hedrin on a free pharmacist's prescription, though they'll only give you an ordinary nit comb so you'll have to pay up for the Nitty Gritty. You don't have to take your nitty kids in to see the pharmacist btw, just squash a nit between two bits of sellotape and take that in as evidence.
But the real trick, whatever you use, is to comb regularly. I used Hedrin twice, a week apart, but I also combed a couple of times a week with conditioner. DD's nits kept on coming back though, every three months or so. Since she changed class groups though, nothing. So it's worth sending in a note to your children's teachers if it happens again, I know teachers aren't officially meant to do anything about the nitty child whose mother never bothers to treat her kid but often they'll have a subtle word, if there are enough complaints.Val.0 -
Try asking your Doc if they can prescribe the Nitty Gritty comb I'm scratching my head just typing this!!Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.0

I'm with Pigpen on this one. Tea tree oil is brilliant on head lice. When my kids had lice when they were little I would sit them in the bath, shampoo their hair using normal shampoo and tea tree oil and leave the lather on for at least 15 minutes. Honestly it sounds gross I know but I could see the little bu**ers diving off the kids hair and into the bath. After rinsing, condition the hair well and comb through with a nit comb. This has to be done nightly to kill any new eggs that have hatched.
Vosene as Pigpen mentioned contains salicylic acid which deep cleanses the hair and will loosen any dead eggs.Today, I check their heads and they are crawling with them. Nanny, I'm told, didn't use a nit comb, she just used the nit shampoo. I'm furious.
I don't know why your furious. Its obviously been a long long time since her own children had lice and she probably forgot or didn't know. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I always used the zapper comb and tea tree combination.
My daughter always got lice from the same girl. Her whole class used to get a letter saying there was a problem in the class and we all knew where they were coming from but the child in question was never treated so it was a vicious circle.
Eventually the child moved schools and we never had them again. I did feel sorry for the poor girl though, the other kids had started to say things to her and it wasnt her fault.14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140
