If you were buying a 12 plate 1.6 diesel (which I'm considering for next car in a couple years time) would you buy Elegance or Greenline II?

So far my main pros and cons

Elegance
Pros: fancier trim than standard
Cruise control
Centre armrest cubby
Rear bleep bleeps (cant be bottomed to look behind me or learn the dimensions of my car) sensors

Cons: 16 inch wheels - pricier

Greenline II
Pros: higher claimed fuel economy 74 vs 62
also has cruise control
15 inch wheels - cheaper

Cons: no cubby armrest :(

Right that's what I've been able to come up with so far can any Octavia drivers or people with nothing better to do add to that?

I would drive them both. The ride in the Elegance should be more comfortable than the Greenline.

Does not always work like that ! 16" wheels , lower profile tyres , harder on the butt.

I drive an 8 year old Elegance spec Octavia. In my experience, the higher spec has led to more things that could go wrong and I sometimes wish I had gone for a lower spec model, but generally I'm happy with it.

The rear parking sensors are definietely handy, as actually 'seeing' where the back is, is tough. I don't like the supposedly rain sensitive wipers on mine and would prefer a conventional intermittent wipe that you could adjust the speed of. But I do like the auto-dimming rear view mirror for night time driving (and you couldn't have this without the silly wipers).

I have cruise control but don't use it as I think it is safer not to, and I can get better fuel economy with my right foot.

I find the arm rest storage handy for keeping my work ID in :). Do the modern ones have a connection for an MP3 player in there? If so then having that as a spot to leave an MP3 player would appeal to me.

15" wheels are better for fuel economy that 16" ones. Are 15" tyres definitely cheaper though (I haven't checked)? The tyres on my Octavia are 16" 205/55, which I think is the most common tyre size of all, which keeps prices low. Larger diameter tyres will also last for more miles.

You've probably already looked on Honest John, but the real mpg for the Greenline II is likely to be lower by a greater % than the 'regular' 1.6 TDI, such that there may not be much in it. If the Greenline model has Stop-Start and the other doesn't, that's a significant extra system that could go wrong, and would make me think twice about buying one if I was intending to keep it outside of the warranty period. That might just be me being paranoid though!

I am very happy driving my Octavia BTW, and the massive boot can definitely come in handy :). Why anyone would buy a Golf instead is beyond me ;).

Do they recommend higher tyre pressures on the Greenline to reduce rolling resistance and therefore improve mpg (slightly)? I have a feeling they do, which would lead to a harsher ride.

Yeh Dad's got a 1.6 tdi SE estate

He didnt bother with the Greenline available at the time because it only added 2mpg onto the official figures.

I did check honest John and the Greenline II does indeed have a lower customer to gov percentage for mpg than the standard 1.6 TDI. But is still higher overall.

The reason I'm comparing them is that you can get similar mileage ones for about the same price.

    Thanks for feedback!

No way, the 15" steels of the Greenline with smaller tyres will be far more comfortable, cheaper and the suspension is the same on both cars.

Ian also look at resale values too as fuel is going to get more expensive.
I haven't looked into the figures but if Greenline means anything like bluemotion then it helps with the future values.

Also do it now, not in two years ;)

Only reason I say is because on mycurrent car the pèrdon who bought it stupidly decided that upgrading to 17" alloy wheels would be a good idea, all it's actually done is made my tyres really expensive!

15 inchers on OH fiat 500 are less than £50 (if you search around) for good quality ones. mine are double that just for the cheapest budget tyre. If I'm looking at anything like Goodyear, Avon etc. then I'm looking at £160 - £250 per tyre :(

I'll check the difference in price for 15 vs 16 on octavia.

I agree about start/stop idea of putting an extra system in charge of probably the most important function of the car - it's ability to start! - fills me with dread. I can turn my own engine off if need be - often need to as there's a train line through the centre of town.

lol really I don't want to be rotating cars every year. Got house and future family to save for. T'would be a £6500 cost with p/x of £5500 on current car. In 2 years time I'm hoping for a figure more like £3000 difference, which does t seem too unrealistic looking at current price difference between a 12 plate and 10 plate.

I don't think - even if turbo did go it would cost me as much as £6500, from looking online. I'm just going to make sure I look after the car carefully. 6 monthly oil change rather than 12 and the other stuff like letting turbo spool down before switching off engine so there's still oil flowing over it. Keep a careful eye on it.
