  • Advantages of a bungalow:
Larger floor area, which might mean a larger garden
Larger Loft which means that a loft conversion is often bigger. (Be careful though and insist on checking the heights when viewing - watch the EA squirm, when you ask to look in loft - take step ladders in car just in case.
No stairs. Which means that you can't fall down them when drunk
Disadvantages : No understair cupboard, and people will think you are retired.

Any issues over layout must be the same in a flat. A bungalow, once inside, is like a ground floor flat, but without people above.... although a lot more expensive.

A lot of the arguments aren't really bungalow -v- house, but are anything -v- house.

Living on one level is common in mobile homes, flats and bungalows - and therefore they must all have the same layout issues.

    I cant WAIT for a `normal ` layout

I'm I the only one that looks at that and sees wasted space in front of the garage, and next to the garage, where I'd be applying for permission to extend forward and use what appears to be a corridoor next to the garage, thus making a decent size garage and workshop

Am I the only one that looks at the size of the loft and thinks there is a massive loft conversion going begging. I think the 3 beds could be converted into a lounge diniing room, the lounge turned into a down stairs bedroom with ensuite, and I reckon there is space for 3 medium sized rooms with an additional shower room and toilet.

How much would a 4 bed, double garaged version be worth ?

All you need is lots and lots of money

I grew up in a bungalow (from 6 months till I was 25) and really struggled when I got married and moved to a house. It's just what you get used to and I would probably find going back to a bungalow strange now.
The possibility of extending upwards is a plus point, in fact I think my mum's bungalow is the only one in the street which is still a true bungalow.
There were certainly no problems with me not wanting to go to bed, the boundaries were just the same except we had a hall instead of stairs.
I did have an irrational fear of someone shooting me through the letter box if I was home alone though :o

I always lived in flats till we bought this house and one thing I knew was that I wanted stairs for no other reason as that my granny's house had an upstairs and was hence a "proper" house from me as a child's points of view ;).

It is really a personal preference. Friends of ours live in a bungalow and it seems more spacious. Ours upstairs is quite small but then we only sleep there. Also I can hear downstairs noise more upstairs than in the one bedroom downstairs.

    P.S. I don't mind hoovering stairs :)
finally tea total but in still in (more) debt (Oct 25 CC £1800, loan £6453, mortgage £59,924/158,000)

When we bought our bungalow I sent friends a text saying "Oops, we appear to have bought a bungalow!" It was kind of apologetic, because we were in our fifties and it felt like a step into old age. Indeed we were (still are) the youngest in our cul-de-sac. We were not looking for a bungalow, it just happened to be the best available property at the time.

However, we love it. It's quiet, with a large garden and spacious rooms. It had already been extended, but we did have a loft conversion. Please note, done properly these are not inexpensive! It was old fashioned - nothing new since it was built in the sixties, and we have changed everything and made it ours.

We hope to stay forever (and the carer can live in the loft conversion if necessary!!)

It was interesting to read everyone's views.

  • I lived in a bungalow in my 30s.

I soon adjusted to the lack of stairs, but the cat got very confused ...
