You still have to eat a bit of sugar, fat and carbs. Just trying changing brown for white.

Im don't really eat bread and I never have eaten butter or margarine reallydont like it. you should find whats best for you some people find certain diets work for them. For instance if you have a b12 deficiency and cut out red meat and fish your going to do nothing but sleep, ssame with every other vitamin and minerals.
it might not be much, but its better than a kick in the teeth:rotfl:

I've lost over a stone in that time frame and gone from a 16 to a 14 size.
Portion control and cutting out bread (I ate a lot of bread) I just don't buy bread and of course the [1]accompanying butter anymore, I cut the size of my [2]breakfast cereal portion in half and have just [3]skimmed milk also use half the amount of orange juice but top up with water. Soup for lunch and [4]halved the amount of potatoes or [5]rice or pasta with my evening meal. Lots of salad meals without any dressings.. its worked for me and the 4lb I put back on when I was on holiday has already come off again after a week.. I've got used to no bread now..

Oh and make a big bowl of fruit salad and sugar free jelly to replace the puddings/ice-cream I had been eating.. [6]I sometimes replace lunchtime soup with fruit salad.

[1] butter is fine as long as it's real butter and not a spread or margarine.

[2] have you thought of replacing the cereal with eggs? scrambled eggs, mushroom & spinach, or an omelette, or poached egg, ham & asparagus, etc?

[3] full fat milk is actually healthier as it contains less sugar by volume and less milk will fill you up for longer.

[4] potatoes are healthy carbs and contain more vitamin C than citrus fruits, and lots of fibre, especially if you retain and eat the skins (wedges, jacket spuds, boiled baby spuds etc).

[5] cutting the rice & pasta is good, If you want to eat small amounts of rice, make sure it's white basmati :)

[6]you'd be better off keeping the soup and ditching the fruit salad. High sugar spikes encourage insulin spikes which prevent the body from burning fat as fuel.

But other than that, well done for making changes to your diet and for achieving good results :T

I thought sweet potatoes were better as they count as one portion of vegetables a day, but white potatoes do not.

Why white basmati rice rather than wholegrain rice?

Sweet potatoes are equally as good as white potato. Potatoes are not unhealthy, far from it, but the way we sometimes cook them might be, i.e. chips and roasties ;)

I'll come back to you about the rice tomorrow. I've got a terrible med-induced brain fog at the moment which is affecting my typing let alone my ability to explain things properly :o

Ooh I'd live to know about the rice too as I though brown was healthiest too??

I used quinoa as a substitute too and good for you :)

Yes I eat quinoa too but I am still hungry afterwards but that does not happen with rice or potatoes.

    I find rye filling though.

    great things said so far,

I eat brown bread at least 4 slices a day, i have brown rice instead of white. Cereal I have museli or granola. Maybe toast sometimes. A sandwich for dinner usually tin toms on toast, then evening meal.

I do a lot of walking.

Thats interesting I have just checked the labels full fat is 4.7g sugar per 100ml semi-skimmed 4.8g per 100ml so yes there is a difference but only a small bit. Fat is 3.6g for full fat and 1.8g for semi so a much bigger difference on the fat. I do no that sugar turns to fat and I am not expert but going on the figures I would guess that it still makes semi the better option?? or does 0.1g sugar make that much difference to how much you feel full?

For anyone whos interested full fat is 65kcal per 100ml and semi 50kcal so not really that much difference on the calorie content so unless you are drinking loads a day I don't suppose it really matters which you have.

I drink semi but only because I don't like the taste of full fat in tea and ds has full fat (better for children).

I'm beginning to think I must be living in some sort of parallel universe. I'm sure I read some studies recently that actually explained why white rice was better than brown. Something to do with the bio-availability of nutrients in brown rice being compromised due to the indigestible husk still present. But now I can't find the information. Maybe I dreamt it :rotfl:

In any case, rice overall isn't particularly nutritious so we should be limiting the amounts we eat, so whether that's white or brown isn't going to make any significant difference. Just eat the one you enjoy most. Out of the white rices, basmati does have a lower GI though, hence why I suggested that one above.
