Where would any water from a leak go - if it was a valve gland that had gone - and with the amount that we have being lost (ie a full system worth) - this would presumably be obvious ...?

You don't have a dry system, it's just at normal atmospheric pressure when it's depressurised, as VallHaller pointed out. A few pints at most.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Yet more woes ....

This morning - we came downstairs to a pool of water - dripping from the bottom of the boiler (from where the fill valve is located) - not much, probably 1/4 pint in total - but straight on to our microwave which will have to be replaced now !!
  • you need a boiler engineer (RGI) not a plumber to have a look, it sounds like you have an internal leak within the boiler, now whether this was there before or whether this was caused by you running the boiler with no water in it is anyones guess, if it's anything major within the boiler you would be better getting WB out to fix it on their fixed price repair

if you do get WB out don't tell them you ran it dry
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Thanks - £210 +vat fixed price repair appears pretty good as a maximum cost - plus (of course) - the cost of finding and curing the leaking pipe !
But - won't WB ask how the boiler ran dry in the first place - and the pipework leaking will not be covered under the T&C ??
and our "plumber" is a CORGI registered heating engineer !!

I rather hope not, since CORGI ceased to be the valid authority about five years ago. Your RGI needs to be GSR (Gas Safe Registered). Anyone claiming to be CORGI is a cowboy, and a pretty dumb one too).

I'm not saying he isn't qualified, but there is a world of difference between a boiler service engineer & an installer, just because they are gas safe reg doesn't mean they know how to repair a boiler !!

Don't tell WB just tell them you woke up this morn to find water under the boiler & the pressure on 0

Your plumber will still have to find the leak if it is on the heating circuit & he may be able to find what's leaking in the boiler, but as I said unless the boiler leak is anything straight forward (cheap) then WB will change/repair anything that's needed for the fixed price
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

yes, but make sure you read the t&c

I personally don't like their boilers, but their aftersales are one of the best out there
