I've never used FD's 0845 number. I always use the 0113 - so free in my bundled minutes.

You actually prefer the HSBC online banking to FD? Really?
FD's is so much simpler to use and I don't know what you can do with HSBC's that you can't more easily with FD.

But I agree this 'security' device is a shambles! They had this over the others....and as others have said, it does nothing extra for the customer.

I agree with you. And to respond to TheEffect saying "HSBC has a much better Internet Banking, a 03 number that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and has the same financial stability as FD"

That isnt really surprising as they are one and the same organisation. If you have an FD and HSBC account then you are only covered for £85k in total across all accounts. But, when calculating whether you qualify for free premium banking the two parts of the organisation are regarded as completely separate. Isn't that called having your cake and eating it !?

When all the banks resolve the biggest security hole that currently exists with their cards and ordering by phone I may accept the added security they are suggesting. But still have to question why banks and major organisations accept a simpler method of password and a simple small single button fob with one time passcode for their staff to access secure systems, but we as customers have added complexity.

If a digital secure key is valid for a smartphone then we should have one for the PC as well and not have to have a physical key. The access device that someone might use is different but the same security issues apply.

I am not asking for them to direct smartphones to download from anywhere else, but to allow me to download the app for PC use from a site that doesnt require further login etc.

There isn't an app for PC use, so even if you could download the app without further login you can't do anything with it apart from install it on your phone. You then run the app to generate a code which you type into the website thats running on your PC.

So your phone simply replaces the SecureKey.

I'm perfectly fine with the system and it's miles ahead of other banks with card readers and fobs. I rarely take actions that would require the secure key and if I had to I always have my smartphone on me. I'm more than happy to call them instead as well.

People aren't thinking about there actual usage patterns as well. Record what you do in internet bank for a month and mark off how many times you create a payee or other action then work out the 30 seconds or so extra it takes for this sort of security. The impact on me is probably 2 minutes of my time a month...

Also I think people are missing the fact that you can log in with a secure key or without depending on what action you intend to take. It's not only secure key, or only without.

To add there will never be a PC version of the app. By installing it on the PC you're logging in to inet banking with you're essentially making the security pointless. Secure key fob is to protect you from the PC you're using being compromised.
Having the app be installed on phones is also lessoning the security but there is a MUCH less malware for phones targeting an individual bank like this so it's still acceptable.

Phones are typically more secure than a PC. Less chance of viruses due to permission based services, less viruses and trojans in total, and more security overall - ie, if I lose my phone I can ask it where it is and if its not at home or work (ie, possibly stolen), I can blank the phone and revoke all access.

Very soon we'll see per application security and profiles on phones that will limit exposure. I put my android phone on kids mode before I have it to other people which does a good job of keep people out of Facebook and the like :)
