Excellent, thank you!
So, in preparation - I've got to be able to run at least 31mph and be able to scream...... loudly:D
It sounds right up our street - I don't think it'll put us off camping in Yosemite. Now just got to work out more or less to the minute, when to try and get a booking done. Swift read of another website and seems like I'll be setting a middle of the night alarm!:eek:0 -

No
You only have to be able to run faster than one other person in your party0 -

I'm hankering after a road trip from reading this thread

Can anyone tell me the rough cost per week of hiring a car over there please?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

Depends when you go, it's the flights that cost!!
For car hire take a look at dollar.co.uk. It really depends on length of stay, size of car etc:)Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -

Anyone any experience of Curry Village pls?
We stayed at Curry Village a few years ago - and found it was fantastic.
There are general two types of accommodation (when we were there anyway) - canvas tents with proper beds - with central showers/toilets that the guests use - and log cabins. Found it excellent. One tip - if you're planning to go - take your own chunky padlock with you as you will need it to secure the bear locker where you store your food. Remember do not leave ANYTHING in the car. Unfortunately, didn't see any bears.
Another must have is Sequoia National Park - just south of Yosimete. Mindblowing - massive trees.

I'm now thinking that my comments on here are to biased towards touring holiday
I used to do the suck it and see thing, but I now pre-book the whole holiday - and especially tours and shows, and I tend to use them as "milestones" to plan the rest of the trip around.
I agree there's fun and excitement to be had from finding places on the road and highlights like finding a nice motel in Monterrey for $5 a night (!) - but I love the pre-planning as much now.
And I had too many instances of trips or tours being full or just missed to not plan around them. I also hate queueing, and nothing feels better than smugly smiling at the lines of people who didn't pre-book as you walk past them.
For instance, on my trip in 3 weeks I've got the below booked or planned :
- Tabernacle Choir Sunday am broadcast in SLC
- Dinner in The Tree Room, Sundance (special occasion!)
- Sunset Jeep Tour of Monument Valley
- Cowboy Dinner at Bryce
- Horse-trek at Bryce
- 2 shows at Vegas - Donny & Marie Osmond (Don't ask!) & Absinthe
- Valley floor tour at Yosemite
- Alcatraz Tour plus guided walk in SF.
I think the vast majority of those wouldn't be available - or would be more expensive - on the day, hence the pre-planning.0
