For me, having all the stops planned ruins a road-trip
I much prefer to have a very loose itinerary and see what crops up.
I'd normally have a few 'must do' things but I'd hate to be tied to a date and time on it.

Some people love it but I usually find an over-researched and over planned holiday a bit of a let down.
As long as the plan works for you, go for it.

Absolutely 100% agree with this - the whole point of having a car is that it gives you freedom!

It's fine to have a semblance of a plan of course, but I'd certainly factor in some time for 'spontaneity'.

    Spit out some bubblegum?

My main memories of SLO are of being absolutely desperate for a pee and not being able to find a toilet that wasn't closed for maintenance or cleaning. In all my adult life I don't think I have come as close to wetting myself in a public place.

The other memory was of how early places stopped serving food. It was practically impossible to find anywhere open after 9:00pm.

oh dear, not warm and fuzzy memories then ;)
For me, its the delight at seeing the 'no smoking in public places in San Luis Obispo' signs, my son training with the SLO rugby team in a public park, the Thursday night Farmers Market, the Ginger, Ginger with an extra shot of Ginger that I got from the Natural Cafe (truly the worst thing that I've drunk in my life) and the general great ambience that the place has (supposedly the happiest city in America).
I've never been to a place where every single person that I've spoken to tells me that it is such a great place to live !

Its funny that you should mention food places closing early - we commented at the time how early CPK closed. Did you get anything to eat at Firestone Grill . Simple American food done well :D

My itinerary for a motorbike trip later this year to Tenerife

    23/9/13 @ 11:00 ish
    EuroTunnel to Calais

Tour around the Basque country if the weather is OK
Catch up with mates in Gibraltar [if I can get in]

    15/10/13
    Ferry from Cadiz

    17/10/13
    Arrive Tenerife

    29/10/13
    Fly home

Any more detail than that would cause an anxiety attack :)

I suppose we're all different. I couldn't be doing with the hassle of finding a bed at the end of each or every few days. I want a clean room, decent reviews and the ability to cancel 24 hours before.

I have to chirp up about Vegas being Blackpool in the desert! Don't listen to that statement. It is not at all. The resorts are an attraction in themselves. Millions are spent on them. Having said that, we did a 4 day trip there 2yrs ago. This time, it's a bed for the night and off we go :-)

Where did you stay in Yosemite pls? We're past campers (summer holidays when children were younger) and fancy Curry Village. We're planning to go next September - hoping to get flights booked in October - so hopefully warm enough for Curry Village. Plan to stay 3 nights.

Anyone any experience of Curry Village pls?

Tenaya Lodge. We would have stayed inside the park but it was fully booked. Tenaya is only a 5 minute drive from the redwoods in Mariposa Grove, so it proved just as convenient.

Las Vegas, for example. Glad I went there but I doubt I'll be going back. Blackpool in the desert.

    :p

Blackpool doesn't have people giving out cigarette cards promising "a girl to your room in only x minutes" every 10 yards, nor as many people 'down on their luck' panhandling for cash.

I was there for one night and in hindsight, passing on by wouldn't have detracted from the holiday -- however, Mrs Cat an the kitten liked the place, or ore accurately, the Kittens liked the pool ;)

We never saw more than a handful of people down on their luck. Now San Francisco, that is a whole new ball game! I felt intimidated at times.

If you don't give the guys/girls eye contact, they don't give you the cards.

Channel 5 last Friday has "the worlds busiest" hotel on. It was the Venetian. Stunning resort. Sure it will still be on catch up
