Some of your hotel prices look a little high - eg Bishop, we paid $35 through Hotwire for bed and breakfast (for four people) in a three star Best Western. However, hotel rates are quite impacted by supply and demand so perhaps that's why (we stayed mid August).

Your route looks good - we did a similar one but the other way round. Have fun!

ETA there's no mention of the trip from GCNP to Kingman, but I think you've included it in the travel time but maybe written Kingman rather than Tusayan? You didn't fancy staying in the park at all? We are at the Maswik Lodge (expecting it to be very basic but well situated) for $79/ night (sleeping four).
  • thanks!! I have included in the travelling time but was posting for people to advise as its the first time we have gone here....we usually go florida.

I have looked for accommodation in the park but I will have a look at the lodge you have mentioned. we have left it late booking but I don't expect this will be our first and last trip tho :)))

You are going to be spending one hell of a lot of time behind the wheel/ driving on your trip. Have you allowed enough time to explore the areas that you're driving through.

Can I suggest that you stay in San Luis Obispo on Thurs 26th ? SLO is a vibrant town and Thursday night is Farmers Market night when the middle of town gets closed off to vehicles. Enjoy the open air BBQ's.

p.s. where are you picking up your connecting flights.
  • we do enjoy driving and sightseeing do you think this is too much? we know with travelling stopping etc we will on the road for 10 hours a day easy

thanks for the suggestion I have not decided on the last few days back to LA.

We are connecting at heathrow so direct flight from there

I love Florida but The West has the most incredible scenery - some a bit otherworldly, but not to be missed.

10 hours a day on the road would've been too much for me, but if you want to max out the places you visit, and don't mind being behind the wheel, that could work. We stayed for 3/4 days in a few different places so we weren't constantly packing and unpacking, but some people felt that was a waste of a road trip. We didn't, but each to their own :T

We looked at this, but with only 11 days we decided to drop San Fran and just do la-lv-sd in October - someone I know who works for trek America and does it for a living said that the tri city la, lv, sf loop deserves 3 weeks to make it enjoyable and not a constant drive... Good luck, enjoy it :)

In all honesty, yes --- would you spend 10 hours a day driving & sightseeing in the UK, unless you had a really pressing reason to do so ;)

I love driving and driving in America even more so -- but its a LOT more fun exploring than it is to spend multiple hours plugging along an Interstate/desert.

we do spend a lot of time in the car sightseeing. my oh is a transport director and we often take a job on at the weekend just for the drive but I do understand where you are coming from

thanks I might drop a night at LS and SF just to spend less time on the road

We've just done this trip in reverse order. Did it over 18 days - 1400 miles altogether!

LA - Cambria - Big Sur - Monterey - San Fran - Yosemite - Lone Pine - Vegas (incl trip to grand canyon south rim).

    Enjoy!
