Pretty sure no burglar will be whacking your door with a great big hammer in the middle of the night when they can just break the lock barrel.

I would rather a cheaper door with a more expensive lock

That's what I was thinking. No burglar goes a round with big sledge hammers knocking down doors like that. Think of the noise!

the only people who do are the police :rotfl:
The door is rarely the issue if being smashed with a sledge hammer. It's generally the frame that gives way first
  • Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.

After reading your advice (and some truly terrible reviews of the national companies) I decided to cancel the appointments with Coral, Everest and Anglican. One in particular was very reluctant to cancel, after (what felt like) several years on the phone I finally got him to tell me that their bottom-dollar door would be in the region of £1000 and that range wasn't included in the half price sale. Surprise surprise! I hung up on him.

In the end I called a few of the local companies who were all much more helpful and willing to give me a rough estimate for the work on the phone.

I've had a really friendly, helpful family firm visit me tonight. They've quoted £495 for the door, fitting, an upgraded lock, high security handles, extra keys, and disposal of my old door. No hard sell, just quoted what I asked for and threw in some extras.

I've also asked them to re-fit my current door chain and install some sash jammers that I already have and they're willing to do that at no extra cost :T

I've got an anti snap lock ready to be fit to my french doors which they're going to do free of charge as well. I ended up ordering some new handles for my french doors because they've been so helpful!

Oh, and they're fitting the door next week. The lead time for the nationals was 4 weeks!

All in all I'm really happy with the company I've picked. I just hope they deliver on their promises! Its an expense I could do without but I feel like I've got a good deal without being bullied into buying other products, and that's the best I could hope for.

Thanks again for all your advice! You guys are great!
  • One other thing...

Is it just me or are you lot absolutely appalled by the prices the big companies are charging? How can they justify it when the smaller firms are charging half the price?

    I'm angry!
  • You can always try this web site. http://www.doubleglazingontheweb.co.uk/find_quote.php

We used them about a year ago and they were great as we had a window that needed changing, we are looking at doing some more next year and will be using them again.

No, its always been this way. Set a nonsense high price, then discount it and discount it until the customer caves and says yes. Its the same with cars - you never pay the list price, there's always a discount or "free" extras.

People have always been drawn by the magic words SALE and BUY ONE GET ONE FREE and 50% OFF and AN ADDITIONAL 50% OFF (after all, 50% + 50% must surely mean its free!?). It'll never change.

Mary Portas managed to convince CSL to drop the nonsense half price sofa sales. A couple of years later they're doing it again - clearly people won't buy unless they *think* they're getting a deal.

    I got fabulous service from
High view windows uk ltd they are based in Leeds

    www.highviewwindows.co.uk

They did my windows last year and gave me a rough quote for rockwood doors that soon as I have some money will be ordered and fitted at £600 that's not bad and they have great lead times as my windows were done inside 2 weeks.

sorry I know the quoted post was not aimed at me but I cant praise this company highly enough :)
    63 mortgage payments to go.

    Zero wins 2016 😥

This is a lesson for us all. OK nobody's going to quote for a loft conversion or moving the bathroom without a home visit, but for most things, I think that the more reluctant a trader is to quote a price then the more excessive it is likely to be. This applies in other areas, such as market stalls; I usually ignore the ones that don't display prices.
