How much do uPVC doors cost?!

Has anyone recently had new uPVC doors fitted? I'd really like to know a rough figure so I can arrange some finance for home improvements.

Yesterday I noticed that 2 of the hinges on my front door are cracked so it's basically hanging on by one hinge. I think the door must be at least 20 years old so rather than replacing the hinges I think its best to replace the whole thing as it doesn't seem very secure anyway.

Tomorrow I have Anglican homes, Everest and Coral windows coming out to measure up and quote but none of them were willing to give me any idea of price over the phone. They all told me that the rep would tell me the options. This is the first home I've owned, I've never bought doors before so I've no idea if they'll cost £100 or £10,0000!

Could anyone tell me what they've paid for new uPVC lately? I just need one front door. I'm not bothered about decorative glass or fancy extras, I just want a plain white door with a peep hole and a letterbox.

I'm trying to arrange a 0% credit card to pay for the work so I need to know how much it'll cost. There's only one day left of the Everest 50% sale so I need to get my skates on!

Last year we renovated a house...
We were quoted £800 for a upvc front door fully fitted...but opted instead for composite at £1100
Our back door was also done in upvc with 2 glazed panels and that was £500

I believe that upvc front doors should be from about £600 dependant on style and size.

Whilst its your choice...I would also suggest that you contact a local independant window firm...in our experience its much cheaper and so much less hassle than the big companies....even with discounts they claim to offer.

The problem you will face with a large company is they wont want to just stop at replacing the front door.......................it will be the windows,guttering...and anything else they can try on.

A good independant company will give you a price if you phone for general information the reason the big companies dont is because the price starts high and is only recued to more manageable figures,if ever much later in the quotation processes.

You dont specifically mention the large company that im still trying to get rid of 13 months after installation of my windows and doors but they all offer the same start expensive deals and refuse to let go....I'm not a fan!

  • Thanks LEJC, that's really helpful!

I will try contacting a smaller local company as well. I was initially interested in the bigger firms because they offer finance and because I wasn't sure of the cost I didn't know if I'd be able to pay in full straight away. If your back door is anything to go by and I'm looking at £500ish I'll probably just dip into my savings or overdraft to pay.

I'm prepared for the hard sell from the sales reps. I'm adamant that I only want one door and nothing else. If they can offer me a door at half price it might be worth the hassle from them anyway. we'll see..

A friend recently had quotes done for six replacement windows in her house. With Everest and a local big firm the price was around £3300, and they were subjected to a two hour hard sell from each (look at the brochure, look at my little window I've brought with me, etc). Quotes from local independents came in at £2300, and were given after a 20 minute measure up.

the problem with the half price door senario is they usually start at £2k

Do come back after the experience and give some feedback of how the consulation goes...I really do hope you strike lucky with the biggies...but my gut feeling is you'll get the better deal with a much smaller firm.

I had a new back door last year. Four hinged, with a restrictor, two panes of glass (2XGG pattern)- both sealed units were laminated.

Ten year guarantee on door, profile, locking and glazing.

Door was £350 and fitting another £70.

That sounds like a good deal! Did you use a small firm or one of the big guys?

Thanks for that Smudger. I'll see how these prices compare to the quotes I get tomorrow.

I'm really hoping that some of their cheaper doors are included in the 50% off sale. Its probably pretty unlikely but here's hoping! On the other hand if some of the more pricey options are half price I might be able to get a nicer door for the price of a bog standard option.

I will definitely get in touch with some local firms before I make a decision. I'll let you know how they compare.

Another question for you wonderful, helpful people...

Any thoughts on buying your own door and finding someone to fit it?

I've just had a brief look on the wickes website and they're selling doors from £189. I wonder if it'd be worth buying something like that and geting a local tradesman to install it for me?

Presumably I'll need to buy handles, locks, hinges etc as well. Just wondering if anyone has tried this.
