We've just had a cottage style upvc door put in our extension. It has a square window to the top half, the rest is plastic with lines in it, it has yale lock fittings. This cost us £550 through a small local company.

General consensus seems to be that I'm better off with a small firm. I'll phone up the local suppliers in the morning. Hopefully they'll be able to get to me as quickly as the others have.

The more I look at my door the more I realise how rubbish it is! I only moved in 2 months ago and I didn't even notice the doors. Now I'm worried now that I'll be broken into before I get it fixed. At this rate I'll be going with the first person who shows up with a door and a drill!

We used a local firm for the kitchen window / door and the cost was £1200. So the door I'm guessing was about £700.

Looking for a doorset in a new house at the moment - 2 quotes for french doors £1800 - 2400. Both local companies - dread to think what a national would quote. Lead time 4-6 weeks.

If you are concerned about security have a look at this youtube video ..I chose the uprated composite door for both the looks and the security

There is 2 local independent window companies near me (type that send a fitter to measure up and leave, no hard selling) that supply and fit uPVC doors starting from £399 upwards.

Don't know the quality difference between the £399 doors and the £600 doors though.

Wouldn't use one of those horrible national window companies either.

Pretty sure no burglar will be whacking your door with a great big hammer in the middle of the night when they can just break the lock barrel.

I would rather a cheaper door with a more expensive lock

I would prefer both a secure door and a good secure lock thats why I fitted this too

That sounds like a good deal! Did you use a small firm or one of the big guys?

A local manufacturer and supplier, then I arranged my own fitter.

I would not touch with a bargepole any of the national fitting companies. They are rogues - rogues that are full of BS. It is not just me saying this. Maybe five years , or more, ago Which magazine looked at this and the nationals scored poorly. With a considerable margin local independent companies came out on top.

Another question for you wonderful, helpful people...

Any thoughts on buying your own door and finding someone to fit it?

I've just had a brief look on the wickes website and they're selling doors from £189. I wonder if it'd be worth buying something like that and geting a local tradesman to install it for me?

Presumably I'll need to buy handles, locks, hinges etc as well. Just wondering if anyone has tried this.

If you buy and get fitted your own door you are responsible for the Building Regulations. If you get a FENSA fitter, and the paperwork done, this might be easier for you.

I am not aware of Wickes explaining, clearly, the Building Regulations implications when buying their windows and doors. I cannot say for sure as I have never bought these from Wickes - and never would! Wickes fail to tick my boxes in these areas!

Whatever you get, be very, very, very careful about the quality. There is some outright rubbish available for innocent purchasers to splash out on. Including items from the nationals!

You have picked three of the most expensive compainies to get a quotes from there, just do a quick google for doors is your local area.
You should be able to get a door inc fitting for £400-£500
