Hi all
back on the thread again after being away a while causing mayhem and mischief with money  . Pulling my socks up this week and though I've completely blown the grocery budget a million times over already, I'm going to start the menu planning again.
Hope no-one mids but I've costed my meals along the way, firstly for record/noseiness to myself, and secondly to blatantly point out to myself that the £13.09 that these dinners for 3 will cost is what we have easily spend in one sitting on crappy take out waaaay too many times the last few weeks. One unhealthy take out vs 5 healthy varied dinners... that alone shoked me into stopping this madness and get back to DFWness.
Enough waffle, my Mon-Fri menu plan is:
Mon: HM Burgers and chips (£1.25 mince, free bread crumbs, splash of Worchester Sauce, 10p onion. Free buns – given by friend in ‘the trade’ and value chips, say 20p.) Total meal - £1.55 for 3
Tues: HM Meatballs and Pasta (65p mince, free bread crumbs, splash of Worchester Sauce, 10p onion, 25p of pasta, 2 tins of chopped toms, 42p, simmered with herbs) Total meal - £1.42 for 3
Wed: Chicken Tortilla Wraps (pack of 8 wraps, £1.04, chicken £1 from rubber chicken, peppers, onion and carrot, 60p, half bag of value basmati rice, 40p. Total meal – £3.04
Thurs: Mince meat Pasta bake (60p mince, 25p pasta, 2 tins of chopped toms, 42p, 20p onion, sweetcorn, carrot and peppers, 50p. Cheese topping 70p. Total meal - £2.67 for 3)
Fri: Lamb and New Potatoes – Bag of new potatoes, £1.50, lamb chops, frozen veg mix, £1, Total meal - £6.50 for 3
Total Mon-Fri dinners cost: £13.09April 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -

I've been meaning to start this for ages !
Used to do it for DS baby food. Made batches and froze them in portions.
We're spending too much and ended up having 3 (yes that's 3 !!! *hangs head in shame*) chinese takeaways in one week (I had conjunctivitis and DH had loads of uni work so no one to cook LOL).
How do you decide ?? Where do I start ?? What do you do when DH comes in and says "I fancy ....... for tea tonight" and you've already slaved over a lovely meal ??
Please help !!0 -

I started writing a list of things I knew I could cook successfully!Working out how long each takes to cook and then putting them against the appropriate days (eg I work full time so roasts etc have to be done on a weekend, some nights need a 20 minute meal if we have to pick the kids up etc).
When DH says I really fancy.... I say but I've already defrosted this so will still have to cook itSometimes I say well I'll cook that tomorrow/next week to give you something to look forward to
Sometimes I will cook the meal I planned and just bung it into the freezer for another day.
But now DH is getting used to it and instead asks "what's for dinner then?" He's pretty good though and will eat most things.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
better late than never i suppose!
bit different this week i have placed an order for an organic veg box! my box will arrive on friday and part of the subsequent meals will be planned round that,
tues, ginghams cabbage galette (very impressed :T )
wed, hm chilli & hm wedges
thurs, only me so prob somthing on toast
fri, roast chicken, veg, roasties, yorkies etc
sat, LO chicken with somthing from veg box- prior planning prevents poor performance!

So how have things gone this week everyone? Have we stuck to our meal plans?
So far so good for me...did end up swapping the mulligatawny soup and the Glamorgan sausages around (got the beef for the soup out the freezer a day early by mistake ) Sausages were tasty but a pain in the rear end to make (don't be fooled by the name...these are veggie sausages made of cheese, leeks, breadcrumbs, beaten egg and herbs and spices) Trying to mould the mixture into sausages was a nightmare - the breadcrumbs and egg made this sticky goo which got EVERYWHERE, and the leeks kept flapping about and bits kept falling off as I rolled them but I showed them who was boss (ie me) and got there in the end. My DH said in the determination stakes I resembled Scrat from Ice Age trying to retrieve and hold on to his precious nuts  :rotfl:
