Because a PAYG phone does not have a set data allowance unless you have a tariff that includes Data, but why use Data allowance at £30 a month on your smartphone when you are paying for Broadband and can use Wifi.
The £5 a month for BlackBerry services allows you to use BBM etc. and browse the internet using 3G at no further costs from your smartphone, so you dont use any inflated data charges.

I have a PAYG tariff that includes unlimited data for £15 a month and tether my ipad to that.

I use my laptop for writing letters, and running my eBay empire, and if I happen to be using the laptop, for Internet surfing and email.

But my iPad is right next to me wherever I am in the house, to use whenever I want.

Indeed, I'm typing this message, sitting at the top of the stairs.

    I don't have a smartphone though.

If I did, no doubt I'd be typing this sitting on a park bench

Pretty much all of them have data these days though, albeit not unlimited, and not for £30 either.

read my threads before commenting. far too many peolple come on these forums and leave comments without ever reading the full thread.

I dont use Data so dont have data on my tariff.

o2 charge £1 max. per day for data usage, and their is 30 days to a month so 30 x £1 is £30

Well, even if they are, it doesn't matter as no-one has argued and I'm sure there are people (like me until a few months ago) who couldn't see the point either.

I did read the full thread though, and I can't think of anyone that has a smartphone that would be silly enough to spend £30 a month paying for data by the day rather than just getting an o2 payg tariff that includes it for half the price.

Even their £15 Blackberry specific tariff includes 500mb a month without needing a bolt on

I bought a tablet because my works smartphone is a blackberry 9300 and its not smart at all, and I'm not allowed any social networking on it.
My laptop battery is knackered and the laptop is big & heavy.
And I have an extremely bad.....wotsitsname, thingy - oh yes - memory.

So now I have access to the web, me emails, Freegle et all while away from home, hundreds of pointless apps, games galore and can read magazinbes, watch movies or !!!!!!.. :)

I have notepads and voice recorders so its now my memory (as long as I remember to make a note), its my sat nav, amatuer radio transciever (I have talked to someone in Africa on it via it and the airwave in africa) my shopping list, alarm clock, newsreader, compass, protractor, noise & vibration monitor, spirit level, wifi signal detector, oscilloscope, 555 timer calculator, electric circuit simulator, PCB track calculator, password remembering, large button calculator, unit converter, skype comms device.

Why would I not want a tablet if I can (and do) do all that on it?

Can't make phone calls though :)
