coal fire replacment

hi I live in a council house with an open coal fire, but it's hideous and broken in places, but council wont replace it :(
does anyone know where I can get a new fireplace, not too expensive, and do they fit them?
don't really want too spend too much as at end of day it's benefitting the council when I leave lol, x
i came into the world with nothing, and guess what? i still have it!!!:p

You haven't really said enough to help.
What do you want to replace it with?

I wouldn't bank on the Council thinking you are doing them a favour lol.
They are more likely to charge you for taking the new one out and putting the old one back in.......

council have already told me it upto me to replace fireplace, which I find ridiculous, but the one I have keeps falling apart it an ancient thing and really spoils my livingroom, but I like having a coalfire in wintertime x

If you hit the telephone directory, or Google, you will find that there will be many stove and fireplace showrooms in your area. They can show you what options there are - but you'll need to allow for the fitting cost, which may be more than the fireplace itself.

It's all the rage these days to have a real fire in your living room.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

all the rage or not, I remember them being bloody hard work, filty, dusty, dirty, having to bring coal in from the coal bunker outside......cleaning the grate out, making knots of newspapers, chopping sticks, I'll stick to my nice clean, flick of a swith gas central heating, thank you very much.
