A mate of mine is in Guatemala on hols (he calls it 'traveling' but it's really a holiday).

Why do people call it traveling? It's a holiday and their tourists/holidaymakers not travelers. It's fake gravitas.

I never knew there was a difference between travelling and a holiday if somebody were on a holiday.

I'd have thought that if you said you were travelling and were having a holiday then it'd just mean you weren't staying in one place the whole time.

I think getting the phone was "all too much" for me. I didn't sleep the night before .... and I didn't sleep well last night either, after the excitement.

So now I'll be groggy all day :(

Are they an Aussie or Brit? I'd argue that holiday has a particular use in English english. Americans vacation, as a holiday there is more like a bank holiday here. And Aussies (which despite getting correct first time round auto correct is now changing to sissies) have always tended to use words that emphasise the journey. Having regular contact with all three camps, I tend to use them interchangeably, depending on who I'm talking to.

You need a sleep app. Or one of those self hypnosis or meditation apps. ;);)

Oh yes! Vacation, how funny, that's slipped my mind. DH and I were talking about the use of the American ' the Holidays' as in the seasonal time off last weekend. Technically, I think its probably more correct.

    He's a Pom.

A 'holiday' for Americans, as far as I can see, is a religious holiday that they can't bring themselves to name. 'Happy Holidays' seems to mean, 'Merry Xmas' or 'Happy Guru Gobindh Singh birthday'.

Isn't 'holiday', Holy Day? (I'm agreeing with you, although for some reason it seems to read like I'm starting a row).

That's something that I've always found very strange about America. It is far more Christian as a country than the UK in so many ways, as witnessed by the fervour over issues such as gay marriage and abortion. Yet the word Christmas isn't reclaimed or used more widely.

    Yes, exactly.

How dare you agree with me you ruddy cyclist.

So if you aren't travelling buit are going away and its not a 'holyday' the correct usage should therefore be vacation I guess.

It grates some people when Americanisms are correct. :rotfl:

Anyway, so long as everyone enjoys what they do and nooses harmed it doesn't matter. (Lir forces pedant back into its place with a broken lock inside her soul)
