I love cats, but have never been in a position to get one. Had one from when I was about 11-21 or so (well, sister's cat, but family cat)/.... mum never really liked having him round and would always trip over him.0 -
DD has bike to school day today. We have done it before, but today is the first time I'm going to carry on and cycle to work afterwards.
Well, we made it. I learnt the following things:
1) I have lost my cycle clips. Putting trousers into socks was fine for today because it was dry, but I shall need some more cycle clips if I am going to do this in the rain with waterproof trousers.
2) A comb wetted under the tap, a bit of mousse, and the hand driers at work swivelled round to point upwards is sufficient to correct the "helmet hair" issue.
3) The journey from my work to DD's school in rush hour takes much the same time by bike as by car.
4) Our cheap lights are fine for being seen by cars when riding along a lit road, but not bright enough for riding along unlit cycle tracks. We will need to invest in some brighter ones.
5) The drivers were mostly very considerate to us.
6) DD behaved safely and responsibly, and coped well with cycling in the dark, which she has only done off road before. It's why you should rarely (if ever) sit at a red light in front of a lorry or a bus. Much better to jump the light than be crushed.
I'd pay $98 rather than die. That's the fine for a bike jumping a red light in NSW.
At nasty junctions or where there are big lorries, I get off and push, cross the road(s) as a pedestrian, and get back on again afterwards. I feel safer that way."Three women enslaved for 30 years in a London house were beaten during their ordeal, police said on Friday.
At a news conference on Friday, Commander Steve Rodhouse said the women were beaten and controlled emotionally."
Hmmm, it gets worse.
That's not surprising. I think beating servants is fairly common among cultures where it's considered acceptable to keep servants shut up indoors and not let them have much of a life. Much the same as beating children is, in most such cultures.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Caveat: I am talking of cycling on the pavement, not tear-4rsing down it like an entitled loon.0 -

I'd hate for DD to cycle in London.
One of DW's students was killed by a lorry turning some tmie back. I remember reading seeing loads of cyclists hitting cars and trams in Amsterdam. That was a serious point about how dangeroud bikes are mixed in withg cars in areas where that's really familiar and people seem to know what they're doing.
Any other NPs listen to the Infinite Monkey Cage? The last episode was a blizzard of risk-related facts, like how cycling prevent 20 times more deaths a year (due to increased fitness) for every death that occurs by accident.
Oh yes and more than 14 hours exercise a week being bad for you IIRC. And how being a 7-year-old in modern Britan's the safest anybody's been anywhere ever. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Having taken an anti-sickness tablet, I've just (cautiously) actually sat down at the table with Isaac and OH and had DINNER.
Admittedly, it was a carefully-chosen dinner with no meat / fish / strong-smelling stuff, but I did actually eat something....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
