Many, many years ago, when we were just starting out. The trick was to borrow from parents to afford a two bedder rather than a one bedder (having saved deposits by living at home for a couple of years and so not paying rent). They then earned enough rent from the lodger in bedroom 2 to repay the parent loan.

That was the No 1 Plan.
.....But the 2 beds are now all out of reach price wise by at least 25 - 40kk. 12 months ago when we 1st looked they were all in budget but he needed to get a wage record 1st.
The price rises seem to have been in the past 6 months if I look at sold prices.

He was still doing the post grad law whilst living at home until last year so wasn't earning and he was desp to get his own space @ aged 25. That's when we looked to buy but he needed to wait.

Our advice was to stay at home longer to save but he wanted to do the house share instead. Whilst we put no pressure in him, he did know we couldn't start the work on the house until he had left as we would only have 2 working bedrooms for a long while (and no other rooms to sleep in) .....

I reckon the correct approach is to wait until you're 34 to consider buying a house. Prior to that you should concentrate on getting drunk.

DS1 has that mentality. :(. Sad because it is a waste of money and because I liked him living at home.

For clarity, I should add that we had neither the living at home rent free in London or the offer of help from parents to do this. Though pooling resources and buying together meant we could afford a 2 bed between us - not that we ever let out the spare room.

Also, what is it with people coming to hospitals not prepared?

I am the only person who was prepped for the test as required, (and the only private patient here, I would have prepped the same if NHs, but maybe for some paying an excess might focus the mind? ). I have been subjected to a woman who keeps wanting details of why I am having more tests and leaving the department, and asking for details....from me and the staff.

And two people complained I finished the first test they were there for early...well, yes, not because I was private you dingbats, because I followed the ruddy prep instructions and so was able to start before them and ahead of my allotted time.

Oops, is my grump showing? I really do hate this hospital.

I had tests a few months back and it was a similar experience. I needed an ultrasound on my groin to see whether there was something more to my hip problems. In the letter, the main request was that we didn't drink beforehand and emptied our bladder. If you didn't do that, you may need an internal ultrasound instead (which surely isn't something you would do without having to). Yet people who were there for the same test hadn't bothered to read the instructions and were potentially putting themselves through more invasive procedures than they should have needed which then backed up the timings purely because they couldn't be bothered to read the instructions.

    Stupid!

In terms of the hips, I am hypermobile from the waist down, but nowhere in my upper body. Therefore docs at hospital refused to see me as hypermobile, even though I could demonstrate that I was. Because I couldn't do the thumb thing they wouldn't even consider it. The areas that I have issues with are my hips and knees. Own GP is more understanding, though still wanted me to go through all these tests because otherwise he'd have been seen as going against hospital. Doing a lot of walking seems to help, but if any other NPs have any ideas please let me know as I know this is a common issue with a few people.

Stress over, James has had his uni place confirmed!

No idea of his final results yet as we pick them up at 9.30 but he has had confirmation that he is in at his first choice.

So proud of him, on the verge of (happy) tears here.

Congrats James! Brilliant news. Well done to any other NP children who received results yesterday, hope they were also the ones that you wanted.

Sorry, have been reading the thread backwards, so am a bit slow on the congratulating...

    I've been Money Tipped!

FCC, its not half as serious as in my blood, its in my stomach.....and this test is just a week. Its weekly for various different things. Body just seems to be reaching a new level, something that's been happening a while...I don't know if any one remembers coffee and I broke up? We tried having a casual relationship but I found it all a bit sordid? Well, I've recently made amends with coffee and couldn't understand what my problem had been and yesterday got some answers that are really more questions IYSWIM. Food and I are probably heading for divorce though. Obviously, I'm not happy about this, as even though I am controlled I do love food and I'm not sure its a compromise I'm prepared to make so.....I'm getting the most throroughly advice I can before its happens.

Firstly, congratulations to James for the results, and getting into his first choice. I hope he has a fabulous time and gets everything he wants to out of Uni. (And don't forget that there are quite a few Nice People not so far away from where he is going if he ever needs help...). Apologies for forgetting to congratulate yesterday, I mean to, but I'm extra scatterbrained at the moment.

I've always looked upon renting as the equivalent to mortgage interest, and tried to make sure I've saved on top as my 'repayment' bit. I've never lived in the nicest place I could afford though (e.g. sharing a studio flat with another person), in fact I've pretty much always gone for the cheapest option or as close to it as possible.

I know my mum would ultimately prefer it if I was still living at home, but I don't think it would be a good idea in the long run (for either of us).
  • I tried it once, one of those 3 hour lessons. Ill fitting wetsuit, never did manage to stand up, seemed to spend forever getting back out having surfed in ..... decided a wetsuit/board would cost £200-400 and would be hard to store/move about .... and it was an awful lot of effort "getting out" just to sit there until you could come in again. That's when I decided that a sit on kayak would be more my style (for the future).

As for hot showers.... there weren't any, the beach only had one cold shower on the wall of the hire hut.

Wetsuits don't cost anything like that much, honestly.

And body boarding is fantastic fun, too - to be honest, I do more of that than I do surfing, although they're both great. Body boards are much cheaper, too!

Is that the private uni, or am I thinking of somewhere else?

Does he know yet what actual grades he got in his A levels?
