I always find these a bit bizarre. Nobody bothered when he apparently "died alone" - although he was in a care home (and not at home) .... and all these people turn up, but nobody's signing up to do voluntary visiting to old dears.... and his nephew was at the funeral, so he didn't "die alone" as in having no family.

There are loads of people who "die alone", in and out of care homes - and lots of people without any family. What makes one push all the buttons?

The advert the care home put in the paper? One article I read said he was a quiet person and a bit of a loner. I'm sure the people who did turn up for the funeral felt they were doing a good deed, but it does make me wonder whether he looked down from above in horror at all the people gathered and wished he'd been allowed to go quietly.

  • It most seems to be northern NHS staff talking to pregnant women on reality documentaries about the NHS.

E.g. "You need to stop smoking/drinking/intravenously injecting heroin: it will harm baby".

Something I utterly loathed when Isaac was small, and I'm sure will p1ss me off massively again, is being addressed as "Mum". I'm not some 50 year old midwife's Mum!

Worse, as far as you are concerned, Chewy, you get both in a sense, "Well, Baby, how are we today? And is this Mum?"
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Wouldn't that be 'Baby' rather than 'baby'? They are giving the child the patronym 'Baby'. 'Bub' I find irritating.

The use of Myself, Ourselves and Yourselves when people mean me, us and you bugs me. Oh and I find the use of alot rather than a lot strangely irritating too. And data as a singular word as in 'the data is' or 'the data shows'. The data show that it's particularly bad when economic writers get that wrong.

    "Myself" annoys me, too.

I agree. It would do a lot more good to visit the living, who can notice and appreciate it, rather than waiting until people are dead before acknowledging them.
Not having ever been taught proper English, or the names of those bits of language ..... when is/isn't the right time to use the term 'myself'?

Only only only when the sentence will not work any other way. If you can make it work with "I" or "me" then do. So, "there was nobody to give me the injection so I had to give it to myself" but not "when you have filled in your form, please return it to myself".

Or possibly with "I" or "me" for emphasis, but not instead of them. So, "we talk as though everyone owns houses, but I myself rented for years", but not "we talk as though everyone owns houses but myself rented for years".

In fact, I can't think of any examples where "myself" would appear in a sentence that didn't already have "I" or "me" in it.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I know nothing about livers, but I think I read that it's one of those things that you can just have a bit of one without a problem. I think, could be making it up, that it's been known for adults to donate a part of one where a kid needs a transplant..... or I could be talking b0ll0x and confusing with some other innards.

Sounds about right. You need a certain critical amount of liver to function, as long as you have that the liver can regenerate in parts.

When my father had some newish procedure on his liver they were worried that there wouldn't be a critical minimum amount left to function. So they did the procedure in two parts as a precaution.

I think it's important that you try to find a way to achieve it; closure is important and it's nice she's trying to tie up loose ends.

You get her interpretation of the bits she can put into sentences, which might not resemble what was said at all!

Would an ipad and video calling work easier/better? I know some people are simply never going to learn ..... but an iPad's bigger so less fiddly.

No idea. It's always hard to know what to say after you've done: Hello, how are you? What did you have for your tea? Then read their chart on the bottom of the bed and looked round for things to fiddle with.

I will discuss it with her on Weds after stepfather has left.

The thing is her liver is sound it's the tube leading in and out that is withered + 'collapsed' so we are thinking they will replace the tube.

She cannot get her head around an ipad at all....even a simple Nokia is defeating her. I actually don't think she has ever typed in her life but she could pick it up as she is a very advanced pianist. Probably the wrong time to push new skills onto her.

Once we have got past the conversation you have written I will tell her about DD's night at the premiere of Hunger Games in Leicester Sq tonight. OH's brother did the promo and she will have walked the red carpet (as you have to walk up it 1st to get into the cinema before the stars arrive :)) and they are seated 6th row from the front.
No phones allowed (so she will be twitching ) but the stars always intro the film before the screening but you usually never get to see that bit in the press.
Then she is going to the after show party somewhere in Chancery Lane.
I can't tell you how excited she was when OH dropped her off at the station tonight.

I probably got some right through lucky guesses as most questions I had no idea of the answer to, but had to pick one/anything.

78% London. Somehow! Well fair enough, I've lived within Greater London for almost 30 years.
